Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex 'Taste of Space' Event
A new event at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will introduce visitors to rarely-seen artwork from NASA's archives, as well as space-themed short films and signature eats from local food trucks. "Taste of Space" is scheduled to take place October 19 – 20 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. both days.
Designed to highlight the myriad cultural aspects of space exploration, the event will feature local food trucks, treasures from NASA’s art collection, interactive art stations, real-time art creation by acclaimed artist Derek Gores and the Mars Short Film Festival featuring four award-winning films. "The marriage of art and science is something we don’t often have the chance to exhibit at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, so we’re excited to offer the Taste of Space event to our visitors," said Therrin Protze, chief operating officer, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. "As always, we are hopeful that these opportunities will inspire the next generation of space explorers." Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will host a unique collection of food trucks and beverage options, all located behind Orbit Cafe near the Atlantis Pavilion. VIP Leaded tickets include two (2) Space Bucks for food items, and two (2) alcoholic beverage tickets for $45. VIP Unleaded tickets include two (2) Space Bucks for food items for $35. All VIPs will have access to a reserved seating area with a beverage station including complimentary non-alcoholic drinks, and will receive a Taste of Space pin. Space Bucks can also be purchased separately at $7 per food item. Available with daily admission, NASA’s Artwork Archives will be on display in Space Shuttle Atlantis®, and will include pieces from Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz and more. Six art cases located throughout the building will be filled with 20 unique space-themed pieces. Interactive art stations for adults and children will feature activities like creating a paper rocket, tin foil hats, and ornament painting. Derek Gores, a local artist internationally recognized for his unique work, will be onsite both days of the event. Guests will delight in watching Gores create an original art piece for Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 12 mission. Anyone with Apollo 12 photos, mementos or documents to include in Derek’s commemorative collage artwork is encouraged to submit via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using #Apollo12Art. Deadline for submission is Monday, October 14. Also included with daily admission, The Mars Short Film Festival will feature four award-winning films on the North Lawn. The acclaimed short films, which received high praise from former astronaut Nicole Scott and Gareth Edwards, the director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, each have a connection to space. Played back-to-back at the top of the hour beginning at 11 a.m. with the final showing at 4 p.m., the films include: Rendezvous with Mars, Morning Blue, Nomadic Cloud, and 92Mars.
