If we implemented something similar to ESTA's etc at even a small fee, say £3, think how much money we could generate that could go towards paying for extra customs staff so that we who live here could actually get through customs outselves a bit quicker on return!
Coming back into the U.K. customs is really quick. You just go thro the green lane if you have nothing to declare. If you have something to declare it takes a little longer. Just go into the red lane and declare to the Customs Officer, and be ready to pay.

Yes, I couldn’t understand that comment from the Wizard. It literally takes seconds to go through customs on the way back.

Immigration however has had some excellent queues at Heathrow. Nothing like MCO after 4 Jumbo's have landed. But still great fun.

Are they? I guess maybe it’s because the private healthcare in the USA has more money available to enable them to pursue non-residents. I suppose we could use more NHS money to try and be more efficient.

Anyway, in the USA, there is no NHS and no free healthcare. I mean, if that’s what people want - for everyone to pay for their own healthcare via health insurance like in the USA - then I suppose that’s an option.

At Manchester airport, non-UK citizens go in a different queue to UK citizens for immigration and passport control. Is it not the same at Heathrow?

UK and Eu citizens are treated the same... they use the same queue lanes at all UK airports.. So we have Eu citizens and then the rest of the world.

Yes EU and UK in one queue and rest of world in other.

I agree with border security measures and personally wouldn't have a problem with some kind of travel permit. But it wouldn't be because people who live here could be processed quicker and it's not because I am rabidly xenophobic, it just because sadly we live in a world where we need to be more aware of some cross border movements.

I was just posting in respect of Wizards comments above re customs. The majority of the queuing I have experienced has been at this point of border crossing rather than customs.

Fair enough - you leave, we’ll stay.
