We went to Dominican Republic in March 2016 but we stayed in Samana which was a 3 hour drive from the airport but so worth it.
The hotel was lovely and you could walk down to the town without too much hassle, you just have to give a very firm no and walk away. I don't think I would hire a car as the roads are absolutely crazy most locals ride mopeds and there don't seem to be many rules our journey to the hotel was eventful to say the least. There weren't many Americans at our hotel but lots of Canadians who were lovely. We went out on one trip which was whale watching and just relaxed the rest of the time. We loved it and would definately return.

The best part of our trip to the DR was Saona Island - that place is absolutely breathtaking. For those of you old enough to remember, it's the place they filmed the Bounty Hunters chocolate advert in the late 70s. It involved a boat out to the catamaran which then sailed out to sea for a short while. We got to snorkel in the water for about 20 minutes then back on the boat. We sailed around the island to one of the most incredible spots where the catamaran moored up so we could get out. Here we had guys giving us 'starfish' to hold - not real just heavy stone type replicas for the obligatory photo shot! I dropped one in the water which the guy was less than impressed with. After half an hour there we sailed to our spot for the day. All I can say is it was just the most beautiful place is ever visited, just stunning. This truly is paradise, white sand, turquoise water just amazing. However ...as soon as we sat on our sun loungers bam we were jumped on this time by women wanting to give massages. They started massaging our shoulders then after the free minute the sales pitch started. I said thank you im not sure yet I'll think about it. Lunch was provided under a gazebo- starter was octopus salad followed by a whole lobster each and there was a salad type bar but as the food had been sitting out in the heat and not covered properly I gave that a miss.
After we are we returned to our loungers, went in the water for a bit and then the woman reappeared to push a massage on us both. The price seemed to have changed and gone up since we first spoke but eventually I gave in and thought where else in the world could you get a massage on a beach with this view. The half an hour seemed to go by very quickly mind - more like 15 mins. When we arrived back at shore again, we were harrassed by locals trying to sell cigars and hats. You can say no which we did but it really becomes monotonous. Tip for anyone if they do this trip - sit on the right side of the catamaran not the left. We sat on the left side there and back and had the hot sun on us the whole time. I ended up feeling like I had a touch of heat stroke on the way back. |

Hi Anna!
I could talk about this all day. We are a Christian family and went through the charity Mission Direct for 2 weeks. You don't need to be a Christian though, Take a look at the website. Want to see some photos? This should be the link to my Facebook photos of our trip. It was absolutely out of this world awesome! We made such a difference in the DR, but it made a difference to us too. My 10 yr old daughter is changed from our trip, she has a confidence she never had before, she is more appeciative, she feels sorry if she gets cross at insignificant things. facebook/media/set/?...1&l=dfc3c35239 facebook/media/set/?...1&l=87444b4bb8 facebook/media/set/?...1&l=6c0282b7f6
