This is what they are aiming for !
I used to work for a food manufacturer and Iceland have always been very ethical. Im sure they were one of the first to ban GM foods.
Banning GM foods is not ethical - it's marketing... In a world where the population is 7.5bn and growing, conventional is simply not going to cut it.

someone else gets it!

its like nike hiring colin kaepernick - it wasn't a decision based on ethics, they weighed up the pros and cons and decided it would be good for business

capitalism, yo!

I'm also glad someone else said this. Iceland was jumping on the hysteria bandwagon in order to gain a few more customers, that's all.

I thought the animation used in the Rang-tan advert was excellent. And raising awareness of the plight of orangutans and other animals in the rainforests is to be applauded. I'm just not convinced that a ban on palm oil will necessarily help (see my earlier comment). Plus I'm not ignorant to the fact that this is a piece of marketing by a profit-making business.

Hi Nimbus, I can't see where there has been hysteria about palm oil. I don't think many people are aware of the impact of palm oil production at all, or the fact it's in so many of the foods we eat so I'm not sure how Iceland can be jumping on the bandwagon.

I'm under no illusion that marketing will come into it, it is a business after all.

I was specifically replying to the comment about Iceland banning GM foods. Not palm oil.

Yes they are - and have been for years, they are the company who have pledged to get rid of black plastic and reduce single use plastic now and in the immediate future - not way down the line.

Sustainable palm oil is not a bad thing though. Greenpeace is campaigning against palm oil. Other environmental agencies are not - they understand that people need to work, that people need to eat, that populations are growing and that sustainable palm oil has less environmental impact than some other oils.

Iceland could have made their own advert.

Instead they rehashed a Greenpeace film from a year and a half ago knowing it would never be shown on air as it contravened advertising law in the UK as Greenpeace are a political organisation. It has, of course since gone viral. A fantastic marketing ploy.

People will think about reducing palm oil use. As the illegals undercut the sustainables - the sustainables will go out of business first - the exact opposite of what most green organisations want.

Other people with their political agendas to plug will be encouraged by the success of this campaign to do the same thing. Using this method gets around all the legalities and controls placed on political advertising in the UK.

I think Iceland have been clever - but they have opened the floodgates that will never be closed.

Really interesting perspective. Thank you for posting.

Are there restrictions on political advertising on socialmedia in the same way as TV?

Just thinking about the range of extreme political views out there which could be "commercialised" under the banner of advertising - yikes!

Pity is that stuff and those perspectives are available online if you go looking, the difference with advertising I feel is that is primarily "delivered" to you without your expressly seeking it out.
