Soon as you enter that you're from the UK, it removes these categories. I've tried finding out why and never been given an explanation.
Is there anything to stop us in the U.K. using the US car hire website and renting a premium SUV or does it automatically switch back to the U.K. site ?

Please don't! The cars aren't insured on the US websites.

Okay, thank you!

If I wanted to rent a Chevy Suburban for 2 weeks how would I do that whilst ensuring we are properly insured and without pretending to be from another continent ?

I lay odds a booking through a US website, then adding on Insurance will be more expensive than Brits anyhow

Use Dollar or Thrifty via any number of UK hirers.

I reserved a premium elite SUV for our trip with Alamo, they don't have a row of cars for you to pick from like other classes. in our case we were given a Maserati Levante so a very nice upgrade.

Having had a look online at one, I'd be happy with that

This is a bit worrying. I booked a 'Premium SUV' for pick up this Thursday via the UK Alamo site as the the Alamo site lists this category as 'Suburban or similar'.
I need the Suburban sized vehicle so even though the 'Premium Elite SUV' looks nice, it's no good for me.

Drop me a message as I have access to them through an offline account... Just can't openly advertise it online through the website. Not always available though... and not that cheap either.

Did this earlier this year. I rang and spoke to them and they said stock allowing I could self downgrade to a suburban. Although they gave me an Audi Q7 so I didn't bother. I could have made an X3 or Q5 work though. A Q3 is X1 size so a downgrade in size. The issue without of this is the size of vehicles can vary a lot as I have also read someone was offered a Jaguar F type. I have a suburban/yukon xl booked through DFCH and Hertz for Tampa next year as size will be important.
