With 1 day I would suggest you look at seeing the monuments and whitehouse by walking the National Mall. Not sure you’ll have time for the museums etc.

I second this. See the WH, then the National Mall starting at the Lincoln memorial and work your way back along to the Capitol building. Or, start at Capitol and walk down the Mall, doing the WH at the end.

That's the most iconic bits to see. Museums you won't have time for, unfortunately.

We went on a Segway tour and saw many of the major sights in a short space of time.

This was the tour we did - citysegwaytours/wash...ls-segway-tour

Please check your travel insurance covers Segways though as many don't.

That's a good idea. There's a ton of walking there!

We went for a day and a half (but had an 8yr old slowing us down ) and my recommendation was going to be hire bikes. It meant we could see all the monuments much easier than on foot, plus it was fun too! Trip report below...

We arrived at 5pm, and only had the next day really, but managed to get on a Whitehouse Tour, visit Ford Theatre, walk the National Mall, visit 3 Smithsonians, and get to the Pentagon and Arlington (.via Metro). Very walkable city, with loads to do in a small area. We left the following day at 11am, (so 42 hours in the city )or else we woud have crammed another museum in.

Hi there, do you mind me asking where you applied to get on the Whitehouse tour please? Everywhere I look it’s saying that UK citizens can’t get on 😞

Thanks in advance x
