Taking iron tablets

I started taking iron tablets prescribed by the doctor yesterday.
Yesterday evening after the first full day I started feeling really sick with a bit of a headache.
I am still feeling sick and have a migraine and feel really lethargic. It may just be a coincidence and may just be feeling unwell.
I just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar and if it is the tablets will it settle down.
Thanks in advance.

Nausea is a very common side effect, in my experience it does not settle down - would go back and ask for an alternative.

Hi, this is how I felt when I was prescribed iron tablets and it was found I was allergic to them. I take floradix liquid now when my iron levels are low which is a herbal supplementand works well for me. This is just my experience, hope your feeling better soon xxx

I lost a lot of blood after my recent knee op and my GP had iron tablets sent to me with instructions I had to take them for a month.

After 2 days I was ready to stop. Felt so ill, a combination of really bad stomach, headaches etc. I knew I would react as I did last time when I had to stop taking them and was advised by the hospital to eat dark chocolate and nuts, DH actually brought supplies into the ward as they were threatening an infusion.

Two weeks ago I contacted my orthopaedic surgeon and the advice this time was to eat lots of red meat. Difficult when I felt so ill anyway. I then looked up lots of advice on google.

What is working for me is having the dose split into 3 taking them between meals with a snack and water not tea. With luck I will only need them for a few more weeks but at least I’m not chained to the toilet.

Edited at 03:01 PM.

OP sorry to hear that you’re feeling so rough. I hope it improves but if not I’d definitely go back to the GP and ask about alternative options.
Mine wasn’t prescribed by the GP but I took beetroot extract (biocare) all through my pregnancies to keep my iron levels good.

Also using Floradix (in tablet form) and find that it works well, without any side effects.

Hope things settle down, but be guided by your doctor as to the next step if you need an alternative.

I found I didn’t feel sick if I took them after food. Felt awful if I took them on an empty stomach.

I did not get on with iron tablets. Caused nausea and tummy pains. I take spatone liquid iron instead, which I mix with Berocca (apparently taking with vitamin C increases absorption?) - not had any side effects.
