It sure did, which is why I'm very hesitant about booking them for next year's flight. I have taken a copy of the seating options this time and, if we decide to book seats and then lose them, BA won't get away with fobbing me off so easily.

Not wanting to sound like "that guy" but similar happened to us and kicking up a stink by email got a full refund and free seat selection. Taking money for a service not provided is never a thing to tolerate even if BA claim they can do so.

BA web site will lie to you on available seats. If you look to see what seats are available they will be split across the aircraft with a suspicious amount of seats you want all together. Panic mode sets in and you might be duped into buying them.
Log in at the 24 hours check in window and all those seats with an X may be now available.
I’m flying to Munich tomorrow business class with BA and all week there has only been one pair of seats available. At check in this morning I had the choice of 3 pairs of seats.

I believe all seats are not open for selection from the start they hold a certain amount of seats closed and then open them at the last minute

Well done. I should have taken it further but I couldn't check to see what prices the other seats were. This time I've taken a photo copy of the seat plan in case we book seats and get moved.

We have flown BA a few times as a couple and never had an issue getting seats together at online check-in. The seats become available 24 hours before your first flight which means you get a head start if you’re connecting in to Gatwick.

We’re flying with them next month and pretty much every seat in economy was showing on our flight when we booked. We have an infant in our party, but my parents are on a separate booking and can see the same available seats as us. Interestingly the problem has gone up now despite maybe 10% of seats being booked. The seats behind us are £65 each!

EDIT: they do withhold bassinet seats until online check-in to make sure that parties with infants get priority.

BA actually allocate seats 3 days before departure although they do not show it to you. They try to keep parties together and do not use underhand tactics. Thats why at less than 3 days on a busy flights you can often not find seats together but at online check-in you are together anyway. BA also only tend to block the exit row and bassinet seats. They also often release the bassinet seats / mobility before 24 hours so worth looking before then. However if an infant / disabled turns up at check-in you could easily lose the seat so it is a gamble even at on-line check-in.
But I've noticed that when you hit 7 days (Bronze can allocate seats for free) and at on-line check-in they often seem to block middle seats if you move window / aisle. However on a busy flight this seat will get filled just online don't have access to it.

That was our experience. My sister logged into 'manage my booking' every day from 7 days before and about 5 days before she had been allocated seats together. There were a few threads about it this summer and I think most Dibbers with children had the same experience.

Here's the official information...
