Booked the del Coronado in the Victorian building. Not sure why as the Views Building looked fresher but I like being in the main building in a hotel (loved being in the main building of wilderness lodge earlier this year) Plus the Victorian building is being renovated and opening Spring 2025. Let’s see! I can change it since it’s booked on points so please if anyone has experiences of the two let me know 🙂

I did San Diego Comic Con years ago and its amazing. However personally I'd avoid San Diego like the plague when its on, even though the con is totally my thing. Not that there's any trouble or you can't do the usual touristy things, in fact the atmosphere would be amazing. It's more that it'll be so busy around the waterfront and Gaslamp. The con spills out into the surrounding hotels and bars and welcomes several 100,000 visitors. I think they also block off certain areas now unless you've got tickets. It'd be worth doing a little reading up. As for hotels and tickets, as mentioned hotels in the Gaslamp and waterfront areas are likely all booked up or a lot more pricey than normal, plus tickets for the actual con normally sell out within hours of them going on sale. Think Glastonbury for geek culture!

Having said that if you're stopping a little further out and visiting local tourist attractions they'll likely be quieter than normal on con days and the atmosphere will be amazing. Plus perfect for people watching, especially as you'll see the best cosplay anyway (visitors go the extra mile).

Making me want to revisit San Diego now. Even without ComicCon its an amazing city.

Is San Diego comic con like the main annual one in the world? There are comic cons everywhere no?

There’s lots of comic cons around but San Diego is the biggest one and the one which tends to get mainstream media attention. Its historically where all the big film studios show off their upcoming blockbusters with all the stars and trailers. Its not quite as massive as it used to be on the film front these days but its still seen as ‘the big one’. It has about 135,000 visitors plus thousands of companies, artists and media visiting. I went in 2007 and it was huge then, but has just grown each year since. It runs from Wednesday to Sunday filling the convention centre, the two hotels either side of the convention centre and the marina area behind it. Its difficult to describe how big it is in the city as the UK doesn’t have anything close to it. Worth checking out some youtube videos to see how much it encompasses the Gaslamp and convention centre area.

- 3 nights San Francisco

I’m ok on the other locations but struggling a bit on San diego. Been looking at the gaslamp quarter and little Italy. But thinking it would be nice to have a few nights on the beach during a California trip too.

Any suggestions? We are a family with 2 kids 12 and 10.
We stayed in La Jolla and loved it. Near the beach, lovely sunsets overlooking all the sea lions at La Jolla cove.
