Was he diagnosed with dementia via the GP? It might be worth speaking to them re medication for his dementia, it might help with his agitation.

So the move went ok. Dad didn't ask any questions so I didn't have to fib. But his care home has mislaid his jacket and shoes so he had to travel in his slippers. I managed to label most of his clothes while they were unsuccessfully looking for them .Luckily it had stopped raining when we arrived at the new home. But we had to wait outside for a while as no one answered the doorbell. I had to phone them to ask them to let us in. They apologised and said they didn't hear the bell over the Christmas music they were playing. We were a little late arriving as we got stuck in traffic, but it was still before 4pm and the manager who we were expecting to meet had gone home 😐 the charge nurse was lovely and got dad settled in but had not been informed of his 1 to 1 care and no one took any other details from me , she was obviously not pleased at the way the handover had been organised ( or rather, not organised ). I'll contact them later today, I'm sure there are forms I'm supposed to be signing and I haven't even got bank details to pay them.

We are in England. We managed all of my Grandma's affairs with financial power of attorney. When her capacity finally went, we did regret not having a health and welfare power of attorney but court of protection involvement was not required. Her social worker worked with us, and sought family agreement for all decisions. She supported all of our decisions, so it meant we (fortunately) were not disadvantaged with not having the health and welfare.

She was self funding, but the social worker was there to ensure her needs were met, not deal with the finance. I thought the comment you received from the SW office was very odd. SW are much more than about finance. I thought we were not a family that would ever need SW involvement, but they were invaluable when both of my grandparents aged. The hospital made the referral for my grandad upon his discharge.

I hope your Dad settles well x

We went to visit this morning ( and drop off another coat and shoes ) . He was sat on his own in his room and for the first time ever I don't think he recognised me. He thought he was in a hospital visiting Aunt Freda ( no idea who Aunt Freda was ) he asked if we had come to visit her as well. We stayed for half an hour and he talked/ rambled all the time we were there - very unusual, think he talked more in 30 minutes than he has in the last 2 years All about Aunt Freda and her miserable husband and his mum . He came downstairs with us when we left and we left him sitting in the TV room. He seems happy enough and his not being sure who I was made it easier to leave him.

My mam has vascular dementia and it’s progressed to the stage she talks to invisible people. She isn’t her anymore if you know what I mean. She is depressed at being in the care home but there is no help for it after her health deteriorated so that she couldn’t stay in assisted living. Her care is paid for as she has almost no assets and they take her pension , well almost all of it. I never want to be in that state. I go up when I can but it’s a 2 hour drive. Now my dad’s health is deteriorating as well. Getting old sucks 😭
