Exactly this!

Our preferred route is LGW-TPA but it was so expensive one Christmas.
We booked LHR-MIA-TPA & the same home instead for £2,000 less.
It was a mix of BA & AA flights.

Around 3 months beforehand, we were notified that our TPA-MIA flight had been cancelled and we were moved to another.
Unfortunately, that flight would arrive at MIA after our MIA-LHR flight had departed!

I called BA to ask whether we could be moved to the direct LGW-TPA flight and the same home despite the cancellation affecting just one of the flights in our itinerary.
The agent told me that I could absolutely do this; the criteria being that the new airport be within 300 miles of the original.

Very happy as the direct LGW-TPA flights were now £3,500 more expensive than we’d paid

We have been in this situation and rang them and were able to switch flights - were given some choices and were able to switch fights to fly a day earlier. It is worth speaking to BA and see if they can come up with an alternative situation to suit your needs.

Totally incorrect. Always good to know your options and what’s allowed.
