Mobile Kids flying alone?

Actually technically one would be 18 and the other 15.
They’ve never been anywhere by themselves but tempted to let them fly to New York.

Was looking at doing a split holiday but the boys don’t really want to do Disney but as I’m taking 2 little kids as well I thought I’d still do 1 week disney with the younger ones and then meet my boys in New York for the second week.

I would first check the rules of the airline you are looking at booking the flights with to see what the process is. Then I would think through every step of their journey, how will they get to the airport, how will they get to their hotel, how will they get around NY, how can they contact you or you them, what would happen in an emergency etc...

If one is 18 then surely they are classed as an adult so he would be responsible for the 15 year old?

Sorry for not being clearer.

They would only take the outgoing flight by themselves and I would meet them at the airport and we would then stay in New York together

My DD did a return flight to Oz on her own at 16, my sister met her the other end. I was terrified for 24 hrs she even had to change in Hong Kong. DD on the other hand couldn’t understand the fuss. She was fine I think we all worry but if they’re frequent flyers they’ll be fine. Some airlines do offer a chaperone.

I’m thinking if they fly from Birmingham it would be the easiest because they can get a taxi straight there from the house and wouldn’t have to navigate the London trains getting to Heathrow lol

At 18 your oldest is an adult so there shouldn’t be any problems with them flying, but I would check with the airline before you book to be 100% certain.

Have they both flown regularly before? Particularly long haul? Are they comfortable with knowing what they need to do at an airport before flying? Would they be fine going through immigration without you? Could they cope if there were delays, or lost luggage etc? Would you meet them at the airport or would they need to get a taxi/Uber themselves in New York?

I think you would need to be happy with all the points above, and if so, then I don’t see any problem.

My DD is 18 and hasn’t flown alone, but I think she would be capable of doing so and, although she would be nervous, she would do it as she has flown so many times she isn’t stressed about it (no more than any of us are at least).

Just a thought- Could they not just make life easier for you and go to Orlando and not do Disney ? You could go to Disney and they could find something else to do. You could then fly to or from New York together. Or maybe find a holiday you all want to do.

I am a bit of a worrier. What would happen if your flight from Orlando was delayed and they were in the airport in NYC alone ? Do they get on well enough together ? How would they get to the airport if you are in Orlando ? As I say though I am a worrier !

Well the 18 year old has now decided he wants to do the week in Disney first so the 15 year old doesn’t have a choice really. He either comes with us or misses out.
