Flying into LAX

We are planning our 35 th wedding anniversary for next year and want to go to California to do Disneyland and the area around . I am reading a lot of negative things about the airport is it that bad or are some people just unlucky

Hi. There's a lovely special trip for you. We didn't fly into LAX, but we flew home from there last summer.
It was absolutely great. It was really organised and the staff were excellent and polite. We flew from the Tom Bradley terminal with BA. Like you, we were worried, but it was fine. I will add San Diego airport was also excellent, probably the best immigration most organised we have encountered State side. Have a great trip. Xx

Are you flying Virgin? We’ve done that route a few times in the last year or two, out of Terminal 2. Happy to share thoughts if VA is the one you’re on.

Luck of the draw to some extent when coming in. You can be through quickly or it can take 2 hours.

The airport is old and pretty disorganised at times. Not one I would choose to go via, but it's one of the cheaper west coast airports to go via.

I’ve never had a issue flying in or out of LAX Each year .

Longest I’ve been at immigration is a hour , this year we were in the hire car within a hour of landing

Haven’t had an issue either. Was about 50 mins from plane to car rental agency. Going home we found the international terminal very nice - huge, clean, modern, lots of comfortable seating and charge points.

It’s luck of the draw really. Some people get stuck at MCO for 3 hours too. Unfortunately you don’t have much choice if you want to go to Anaheim and LA. The other airports like John Wayne airport and Bob Hope airport only have regional flights so you would have to fly from the U.K. to somewhere else in the US first, do immigration there which could be just as long (last year we flew to Phoenix which is a smaller airport with few international flights and it was disorganised and slow) and then take a domestic flight. Not worth the hassle and likely much more expensive than a direct.

We haven't had a problem flying out from LAX, but flying in last year it took us 3.5 hours from landing to getting to the car hire office. It was quite the worst airport experience we've ever had. So much so that this year we took an indirect flight via Chicago O'Hare instead so we'd clear immigration before arriving at LAX. O'Hare also doesn't have a great reputation for immigration but it was way better than LAX although not without stress - we had 2 hrs 20 mins to transfer (including retrieving and re-checking bags, changing terminals which at the moment is by bus that has to leave the airport to get to another terminal, and going through security again) and made it with about 20 minutes to spare. We'd have been quicker but DD was using crutches which slowed us down a bit.

The best immigration experience we've ever had was at Dulles, that took us 35 minutes, and from what I've read that's not particularly unusual - it just seems to work well.

Flying home I can highly recommend flying United and changing at San Francisco. We walked off the flight from LAX, along a corridor, through a couple of doors into another terminal and were at the gate. No need to collect bags or re-do security (although I think with some other airlines you might need to) - just a couple of minutes' walk then we were in the bar, ordering wings and onion rings to go with our last holiday beer

I'm panicking now, changing at LAX in September with 3 hours between the flights, thought that would be way more than enough
