Candor's Leaf Peeping Tour 2008 - Day 2
Day 2 - The Mid Maine Coast
Day 2 started early... very early. Going to bed at 7:30pm was not a good idea. I woke up at 5am and eventually got up at 6am. At least it meant we were one of the first at the "free continental breakfast". That was actually surprisingly good. You could eat all you wanted from cereals (choices from Frosties to Granola), bread (there were toasters), bagels, muffins (both English & Blueberry etc) as well as a waffle maker! I made learning how to use the waffle maker a priority - indeed the helper said I was like a professional on our second morning there. As well as this there was plenty of fruit juice, tea/coffee and water to drink. Waking up early had it's advantages, we were out of the hotel by 8am and on our way up the coast. First stop was the picturesque village of Wiscasset. The foliage wasn't peak here but there was still some amazing colour on the trees. We spent about an hour wandering around looking at the white houses and also visiting the country store which sold everything. From there we moved onto Damariscotta. Another lovely little town. It was typical New England - beautiful. Mrs Candor couldn't resist buying something in the Yankee Candle shop. The lady in there got very excited that we were from Wales - she'd only had a Welsh person in there the day before. Apparently we'd made her day as she didn't have many Welsh visitors. Digressing for a moment, one of the most enjoyable things about the holiday the most was the lack of Brits there - I'll come back to this when i sum up at the end of the reports. It seemed to be the place that Americans go on holiday all of whom were amazed that people from the UK had gone all the way to New England to see the fall colours. I had always wanted to visit Pemaquid Point. I've had a picture of the lighthouse there for ages. That was our next stop. We spent ages climbing over the rocks and taking photos and just enjoying the beauty of the place. (So very different from why we mainly go to Florida - not that it's better or worse, just different). We actually managed to climb to the top of the lighthouse. You have a guide who talks you through the history of the lighthouse and what you can see from the top. Was really interesting. From there we moved up the coast to Rockland (where the ocean was like a millpond compared to Pemaquid where there was a great surf). We drove up Mount Beattie, which at the time seemed really high but was nothing compared to what was to come. The views were magnificent into the gulf of Maine. We were shattered after the early start so grabbed a quick meal in Taco Bell on the way home via the Maine Mall and were in bed by 9pm ready for Day 3s trip into the White Mountains. A great first day in an amazing part of the world. I will add more photos when I've uploaded them to Photobucket. Edited at 07:49 PM. |
