Santa Catalina island is beautiful too.
We don't drive in the US I'm afraid. I had been thinking about Catalina Island though, where did you get the boat from and was it very choppy? I'm a bit dodgy on boats!

We went to Alcatraz in San Francisco which was very memorable and had a great bus tour of the city.
We've also done the Grand Canyon by steam train from Williams Arizona which was great fun.
Love San Diego especially the old town. The zoo is a good zoo but I'm not a great zoo fan.
We also loved Santa Barbara - very pretty - great beach and the Mission was very interesting.
I enjoyed Palm Springs too

We did Alcatraz last trip, it's great isn't it? We don't feel the need to go back to San Francisco next time though. The Grand Canyon train sounds interesting, DD want's to go to Vegas when she's 21 in 2011, so we will look into the train for that trip, and I also want to see Bryce and Hoover Dam too. I think for this trip we'll concentrate on LA, San Diego and a hop up to Montery on an internal flight, and that will be enough, I'd like to spend a bit longer in places this time as it was such a rush last time I can't remember half of it!

Sounds good. Can I ask which websites you're using for research? Also, have you found a hotel yet? I've been looking at half moon bay inn, which looks very nice.

Hi

I think we went from Long Beach...but looking it up there are departure points from Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point and Marina del Rey.

Here is the island's website.

catalina/main.html

Avalon, the main town is really pretty and has some nice restaurants and little boutiques. There's a crazy golf course if you like that, and you can take a trip inland and view the rest of the island and the buffalo that live there. It's a beautful marina and some huuuuge houses overlooking Avalon. Could quite happily have bought one...

It looks lovely. How long did the boat take and was it choppy?

sorry you did ask about that before...the boat trip was about an hour i think, and I don't recall it being choppy, but i guess you could check the weather on the day...the boat has a seating area inside with cafe, seating and tables - it's all pretty sedate!

Another thought of something else to do - if you/ the kids like roller coasters, 6 Flags Magic Mountain is really good for rides. Makes a fund day out.

no it's LA - Valencia - sixflags/magicmountain/

don't be put of by the picture of the strange man! the park is not disney perfect but it has some great rides like X, Superman and Batman, Colossus etc. Seems to be themed around super/comic heroes!

Definately recommend it for thrillseekers.
