Friends of mine did whilst on a California road trip, 2 adults, no children. Some dodgy places apparently and they've not done it again on multiple visits to America. They thought the freedom would be good. 1 place they immediately returned to their car after checking out the room, didn't even bother going back to reception to request a refund 😨

Is this Orlando or part of a roadtrip? It's possible to do it I suppose but none of us know what pricing will be like next year so no way to tell if it would be cost saving. If you mean out on the road I would have a list of 3-4 hotels you fancy in each potential stop. Too many dodgy motels that attract people up to no good to totally wing it out on the open road.
In the very unlikely event immigration grill you on why you're there, having a return plane ticket, park tickets and proof of funds should be plenty to prove you're a genuine holiday maker so no worries there. |

We had first night booked, flew into MIA then stayed 1st night in FL and drove down to the keys stopping at a few places & spent 4 nights in Key West. I drove all the way to Naples and spent the rest of the holiday there as we liked it so much.

We often make up bits of our holiday as we go along.
A few years ago we'd had some time in a villa down in Port St Lucie and then 4 or 5 nights at the Royal Pacific at Universal. From there we were going to head to the Gulf coast for a week. We were going to drive down and just find a hotel and take it from there. On our last night at the RPR, we were sitting at the bar and decided we didn't want to go to the Gulf coast and wanted a Disney fix so I booked the Beach Club there and then, and about 12 hours later we were checking in. Orlando has so many hotel rooms, you're never going to find you can't get anywhere to stay! |

We’ve done this often. Checking reviews beforehand on line is helpful, also asking to see rooms on arrival etc. Had some great places to stay and like the freedom of changing road trip routes. We know some chains or hotel groups we like. Very little disappointments with what we have found.
