It was going to take us 2.5 hours on the train to get to Manchester it just a little longer to get to Gatwick, after pricing it all up and doing the maths we were still financially better off going from Gatwick for our flights. If you time the trains about 6 weeks in advance you can possibly find cheaper fares for the trains too.
If your flights work out now for the dates you need at a price that isn’t steep then book them, we were surprised how much cheaper the flights from Gatwick with BA were compared to Manchester but in a good way🥰

We live closer to Manchester and always fly from Gatwick or Heathrow.

We were wanting man but started to consider lgw but when we factored in getting there/staying over it wasn't much cheaper.

Plus DH hated the idea of travelling to lgw.

We decided to go indirect from bhx via dub. Happy with the price, not sure about the 6 hr layover though.

For me personally the drive back from Gatwick would be too much after a night flight. I would look into indirect to keep the price down.

That’s the good thing for us we don’t drive and the train takes us within two miles from home😉 so just a short taxi ride to the front door. We exit Gatwick board the train to St Pancras cross the road into London Kings Cross board another train and then stay put until we reach our home town. Nice and straight forward for us but I can see for others it could be much more complicated.
