Putting in a driveway.
I've had an offer accepted on a house with a lovely large garden. However the parking is roadside and if someone parks there I'd have to park a good few hundred yards away.
I've had a look and you can put in 5 square meters of parking without planning permission however this being the Lake District I'd have to double check that. So my problem is between my garden and where the road is, there is a 4 foot wide grass verge, could I put access over that? Also the neighbours seem to have commandeered that, it is beautifully manicured! Thanks for reading. |

I suspect all Councils are different so you will have to check with yours.
In the City where I live you need to submit a 'Crossover Application' for approval (or rejection!) if it's not on a Major Arterial road. If it is on such a road then it goes to a full Planning Meeting.

Thanks for that, the road is a single track country lane. Pleased I now know what it's called.

Just make sure you check on planning permission my friend got into trouble after doing hers. Don't think you can include the grass verge for a driveway unless it is in your land boundary.

Couple of potential issues.
1. Any new access will require sufficient visibility. 2. Any crossing of a footpath or verge requires permission under S184 of the Highways Act 3. Any new parking area will need to be self drainage and not discharge on to the highway. 4. Some local authorities, under planning will insist you have to enter and leave a property in a forward gear. My advice would be to contact highways planning first for advice. |
