Does anyone own a beagle?

I’ve wanted a dog for years but have never really considered it due to work. However, I’m now working from home and it’s highly unlikely that I will ever be back in the office full time again. So we are now seriously considering adding to our family.

I’ve always liked beagles and so wondered if anyone here had one, and if you do can you give us any advice, tips or things to consider to inform our thinking?

Thank you.

We had 2 beagles until a few years ago when we sadly lost them . They are the most adorable dogs, intelligent, stubborn, and quite hard work, but worth it if you can put the effort in.
They are hounds so need a LOT of excerise and stimulating.
When they get a scent they’re off and go deaf to any recall commands . Like most pups they chew a lot 🙄, but all this said , there has never been a time when we would have changed a thing

I’ve never owned one myself, but your post has brought back memories of my best friend at senior school who had a beagle - called Snoopy! Such a lovely dog (hers wasn’t black & white though). Used to love playing with him & helping to take him for a walk!

Hi,

We have a Puggle (pug x beagle) but he is 90% beagle in our opinion. He’s a fantastic dog, well trained, super intelligent. The only problem we have with him is that despite all our efforts his recall is rubbish so we can’t let him off the lead at all, once he’s on the scent of something he’s gone!

I’ve read a lot about beagles being quite hard work but Buddy is fab

Snoopy was a beagle in the comic strip. Our male dog was the typical brown with black saddle but his sister was a lemon beagle , so similar in colour to a lab with white patches.

A friend has a beagle. As said they are very high energy, she can walk for hours, need lots of brain games. Not the sort of dog that will lay in a basket all day while you work from home. As a puppy she cause lots of damaged, chewed herself out of a metal crate. A number of times they were tempted to rehome her. They are lovely dogs but not for inexperienced dog owners.

My son has 2 adorable beagles, Mitzy and Olive, mother and daughter. Fabulous family dogs, as they have 2 boys, who absolutely adore them. They are both very well trained and can be let off the lead, they'll never leave my son or his wife's side, which is not what we were told about Beagles in that if they get a scent, they'll be gone. They did put in a lot of work with them though.

There are health problems with beagles, so it's important that the dogs are health tested. Look on the Kennel Club find a puppy service in the first instance.

We had beagles when I was young and lived on a small holding they got walked all day long but as other have said a scent and they are off like a rocket and develop cloth ears
Mum always said the Doberman’s and the cairn and Skye terriers were much easier
The beagle dog was a proper Houdini could get out of any kennel / run even with a roof on used the wood pile etc to climb over the outhouse roof once to get out to see a lady friend

A friend of mine has one, she often takes my labs for a walk with her beagle.

It’s a lovely dog, friendly and affectionate but as mad as a box of frogs and as naughty as a toddler😂

If it runs off no way will it listen to you, it will come back when it’s ready, it will also eat everything in sight if you leave it.

But that all adds to its character!

My friends have had two, first was quite chilled out but couldn’t be let off the lead as was so obsessed with sniffing. She sadly died about two years ago and they got another one. This one is far more hard work, very vocal and stubborn! Don’t think they are an easy breed!
