I would say Asda is definitely worth thinking about even if it would be a bit of a trek. Their prices are so much cheaper than the others and they use exactly the same lens.

Try Ciliary Blue - online opticians/spectacle maker. I used them for the first time last year to replace lenses in my glasses and they were sooo much cheaper than my opticians (Optical Express) and unbelievably quick turnaround. I think for varifocals they'll need you to get some info on your prescription to help them work out where your points of focus will be or something technical. You don't have to wait until you go to USA though for cheap specs.
