Mobile Travelling to London airports by train

We are hoping to travel to Florida October 2021. Fingers crossed that direct flights will be a sensible price but if not just wondering about travelling to London airports by train. We live 50mins from Manchester so would prefer to fly from there but just concerned re cost! Have you travelled on the train? How was it and how easy was the journey back? Do you fly from Heathrow or Gatwick? We’ve done the journey to Gatwick by road before but we had a nightmare journey there (got held up for 6hrs due to an accident on the motorway) and it was a tough drive home. Any advice would be appreciated (2 adults and 17yr and 13rd old children &#128513 thanks

My personal choice would be to travel down the night before by train.

If you are travelling direct then you will need to probably come into london euston and then on the tube to the Gatwick express

You will have to cost of a hotel st gatwick bit you will save money on morning peak train fares.

That's a summary!

We usually go indirect to Florida usually from Heathrow Terminal 3 I’m not sure where you come into though is it kings cross?
The tfl goes from Paddington to all the terminals at Heathrow it’s around £10 off peak
Gatwick we also try and avoid
We always stay overnight the night before usually in a premier inn

The main issue with LGW - London Gatwick Airport - is its not in London. The other two words are however correct.

You can also use Thameslink train from the following London stations to Gatwick

London Blackfriars
City Thameslink
Farringdon
London St Pancras International
London Bridge

The St Pancras connection works well if anyone is arriving at Kings Cross Station.

Southern Rail also operate from London Bridge and Victoria.

I often find that these services don't take a lot longer than the Gatwick Express and can be cheaper. A quick look at Victoria to Gatwick today the pricing came out as follows:-

Gatwick Express Flexible Return £26.50
Southern Flexible Return £19.50

lots of different types of fares are available of course.

Choices from Paddington are the Heathrow Express and TfL Rail (used to be called Heathrow Connect). I find the Heathrow Express expensive unless you can get a special offer.

We travelled down to gatwick last October with 4 and 7 year old.we are 30 mins from manchester so had originally booked from there but had to rebook a few weeks before due to thomas cook collapse. I was dreading it as the kids were little and we had 4 cases! We travelled down the night before to euston and then walked to st pancreas(about 5 mins) to get direct train to gatwick.I didn't want to get on the tube (mainly the escalators) with 4 cases and 2 kids. We stayed in a premierinn which was near to the terminal. We also saved about £1000 from our original flights.we have rebooked for this october and flying from Heathrow because flights were so much cheaper.I would definitely recommend.

Most trains towards Gatwick leave from Victoria.

From Euston station you get on the Victoria (light blue) underground line, it's about 4 stops.

The Gatwick Express is the fastest, but also most expensive. It isn't that much cheaper than the normal trains.

Alternatively you can walk about 10 mins from Euston or get the tube 1 stop to St Pancras and get a train from there

you would need to go the day before and stay overnight but it can be done at a very reasonable price.
Depending which station in London you will arrive in there are a few options - possibly even a coach from Victoria, not a lot of difference in time but can be a big saving.

the only potential issue is travelling at a weekend can scupper plans - engineering works on the day i get home means that i am going home by coach and not the train.
