Our big holidays are usually summer and/or Easter. If we go to USA over Easter we quite often go for 12 nights so there’s a bit of flexibility for flight prices as the first Saturday of the Easter break is usually very expensive.

For the last 5 years we’ve joined the rest of my family in a big cottage/house in the UK over October half term, gone on occasional Feb half term holidays (LA is nice for a week in Feb) and for a few days somewhere over New Year.

There’s plenty of opportunities to get away but absolutely no flexibility to go outside of school holidays. It’s my husband that’s the teacher and it took me a few years to really get my head around teachers actually having to go in on teacher training days! Lol.

County councils have dates for this year and next year on them.

It's not the time she is questioning.

Or the doubled cost that is a lovely perk of being a public servant.

Its if there is leeway!

The first half dozen trips we went at Easter, the weather was perfect but the parks were busy especially when it was Spring Break. We then switched to summer holidays and although it was very hot and we often had thunderstorms it was much better for crowd levels. The last two weeks of August we found were quieter as some of the
American children returned to school.
Also worth considering indirect flights if you want to save a bit of money.
All schools are different regarding Inset days, we worked most of ours as twilight sessions.
Last July I took early retirement and for the first time booked a ‘cheap’ holiday for May, with that cancelled hopefully we can go next year instead.

Last year we went during Easter, although luckily the Americans had had an early spring break so it wasn’t as busy as I’d feared. We departed on a Saturday and the main thing that left me shattered was working a full week (whilst packing, checking & getting house tidy), then having to rush home from school, get changed, immediately drive down to Gatwick. Although it was exciting I was shattered, and although we stayed the night before the flight at the Marriott I hardly slept a wink through fear of not waking up in time! Obviously it’s a full on holiday, we returned on a Sunday and had to return to work/school Tuesday, so it felt like I’d had no proper ‘rest’ before returning to work, and then made the next term feel really long!
I think if we went again I’d be tempted to do some time in the summer holidays so I’ve got time at home either side to prepare/rest in return. Then again crowd levels- it’s such a dilemma!

We don’t find the crowd levels in the summer to be too bad. We used to do end of August which is definitely quieter, but I prefer the start of the holidays so we have time to recover and get ready for the new term and have found end July / early August better than I expected.

Also find when her graduation ceremony (once they are allowed again) is likely to be. DS was in November but DD was late July during the school holidays.

I am a secondary teacher with coursework heavy subjects so I find Feb and Easter are too stressful to be away as I usually have loads of marking to do in these holidays.

I go as soon as school finishes for the Summer so end of June every year.
Next year I get to go in the middle of June as Scottish schools go back a week early this Monday 11th so we get an extra week next June!

It can vary by a day or two. My girlfriend teaches for a school on London. I was booking her flight for a Christmas ski trip and checked the local authority website for dates. Unfortunately that year the school itself decided to break up two days later than the dates advised by the LA. Had to abandon the non-refundable flight booking and she took the train instead.

Now I check the school’s own website, which I think is a much better place to confirm term dates.
