Car insurance drop after 1st year?

DS is starting to budget for his insurance when it needs renewing in a few months, has anyone recently had the 2nd year quote and be able to give me an idea of what kind of percentage drop you saw please?

He's had a black box policy on his own car which was a learner policy that converted to a full policy when he passed his test (originally March, finally taken last week!).

Thank you

My son renewed his in May and it was 50% drop with black box for 2nd year. 30% drop without black box.

My eldest son received 50% drop with no black box but that was an older car and 2 years ago.

My daughter received 50% drop with black box for second year (5yrs ago)

Wow that's substantial, thank you, really helpful. I'll tell him to budget for a 25-30% drop, then anything better will be a bonus.

He can just put his details into a comparison site and shift the dates a few months earlier to get a good idea (may need to shift the date of how long had a license as well).

Sons policy was also 50% less for the second year. This was with Woop and he kept the black box. The price comparison sites didn’t really work well because they didn’t take in to account the black box record. He had done a few comparisons before he renewed and expected his premium to go up so it was a nice surprise when it reduced by so much.

Did he pay extra when he passed his test? As learner insurance is weirdly cheap compared to fresh pass insurance? My sisters only dropped by around 5% for her 2nd year insuring her own car (admittedly she was 19, but her insurance was still nearly £1000)

Woop didn’t increase the price after he passed his test. He had to ring up to amend the policy and they just charged a small amendment fee for the change. It was around £1000 and then it came down to £570 for the second year this July. He’s not bothered about having a black box, it has no curfews or mileage limits and he has had nothing reported on it ( that he’s told me anyway ! )

No, his policy stated up front there was no increase when they pass.

My son paid £1030 for year one with a black box and around £780 for year 2 without it.He could have got it down to around £600 if he had kept the black box.

My son's insurance increased when he passed his test. After his first year of getting his 30% NCB, Admiral increased his premium a few pounds more than when he took the policy out (he made no claims or had any accidents etc). I did a confused.com quote online and admiral were several hundred pounds cheaper than the renewal quote which was around 30% off the first year's NCB so I phoned them and they matched it. Absolutely no idea why they increased his premium but insurance companies do some strange things.
