Pavement parking.

Glasgow city council are bringing out a ban on pavement parking from Jan 29th. £100 fine for first offence.

There is a stretch of road I use with only pavement in one side. There’s times when I have to walk 50 yards in the road dodging cars due to pavement parking. I would hate to have to manage it with a buggy or children. There have been complaints to the police who say it’s up to council traffic wardens to manage yet the council don’t seem to bother.
I would happily see them ticketed £100 each time.

I think this is a difficult one tbh. I can see both points of view, however there is not enough available parking. DD and her partner had separate flats Glasgow southside, struggled to find parking, both tenement flats. People would park on the chevrons in the middle of the road! It wasn't bad for pavement parking, however they've since moved in together. The road is single, tight squeeze if no one parked at all. It's pavement parking both sides, which leaves enough room for a fire engine/ambulance. Where else are they meant to park? They just have one car. DD works shifts in a hospital, so public transport not an option at times. And they need a car if they want to travel beyond Glasgow.

I think some streets would be gridlocked if people didn't park on the pavements. Streets are not wide enough and more people own cars with nowhere to park them.

Some councils are making more roads one way so that there is road parking on one side. I can imagine this would make it worst in a lot of cases.

Where are the people in wheelchairs and children in pushchairs expected to go if people are parked on the pavements?

This is something that really frustrates me as whilst finding somewhere to park can be challenging and annoying you could literally be taking away someone’s access to services etc if the can’t get about in a wheelchair 😢

North Lanarkshire council are doing it, so I thought South Lanarkshire would be as well.

I've pushed a pram, 3 actually though not all at once, and with toddlers in tow. To be honest I think it depends on the pavement/road in question and a blanket ban is silly imo. DD's pavements on both sides have enough space for prams and wheelchairs and there are drop kerbs so really no hassle, however I do wonder where they expect people to park their cars. And in Glasgow, you can only get a drop side for your front garden if you use certain companies. So, if you wanted to change your front garden in to a parking space, you can't just employ any company, or do it yourself. I can see if a car is fully on the pavement and no space left for anyone to pass so fair enough, but I don't see the harm if plenty space left for wheelchairs etc.

And who decides how much space a wheelchair user needs?
