The Bare Necessities - Day 5 Sunday 4th August 2019 Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom

Day 5 Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom Sunday 4th August 2019

Welcome to The Bare Necessities Trip Report. I’m Abby and I went to Orlando at the end of July 2019 with my husband David, our children Max (14) and Kate (12). We’ve been to Orlando before But this trip was different as we had my parents Jac and Tom with us, they will be referred to as Mum and Dad or Grandma and Grandad throughout the report. I was so excited to take them with us as this was their first time to WDW.

Day 5

We’d agreed to meet at the bus stop at 7.20am so we could get to HS for the 8am EMH. I was hoping this was enough time as it’s pretty close to the resort and so a fairly short journey. Also, I hadn’t booked any FP for HS as I’d wanted to save them for MK later.

I’d set our room alarm for 6.30am. It was a bit of a struggle to get up early now and I knew if I was feeling it then everyone else would be really feeling it . We had another early start tomorrow, but then I’d allowed us all a bit of a lie in for the day after as it was a water park day.

We made it to the bus stop at 7.17am and there was a bus for HS pulling up just as we arrived, so it was perfect timing, that’s 2 days in a row of perfect buses so perhaps Eric making some magic, or perhaps it was just a fluke that the MK bus didn’t turn up a few days ago.

Bag check in the park was pretty good and we were through magic band scanners by 7.40 am and in the main entrance to where they hold you just outside of Starbucks at 7.52 am.

There was quite a lot of pushing and shoving as it was pretty busy and very crowded .

My plan was for us to go to Toy Story Midway Mania and not to worry about Slinky Dog as I assumed that most of the people waiting were hoping to get on Slinky. We didn’t have FP for HS today but as we had a FP for Slinky later in the trip I wasn’t too fussed about missing out.

So, we let the crowds rush on by and wandered past the long line for Slinky which was snaking back to One Man’s Dream. At the entrance to Midway Mania I was surprised to see the wait time was posted as 20 minutes.

In reality, this was not true at all as the ride was a walk on, no surprise really as it was EMH and everyone else was queuing for Slinky.

There was a weird back door entrance for the ride, I don’t know if they were doing a refurb of the queue area or if this is now the entrance to the ride, but we were taken outside of the main queue room and then down the side of the building and then back in to the loading area. Weird! It all felt a little back-stage.

We were soon on the ride and I was with Kate, Dave was with Max and Mum and Dad were together. We had explained the set up of the ride and challenged Dad to get another high score. He wasn’t overly optimistic he could get a score as high as his score on Buzz where he was very nearly a galactic hero.

Well, unfortunately part way round the ride stopped and came to a halt. There were some technical issues. We waited a little while so I took photos of the others in their car.

Then some cast members came along, unlocked the cars and we had to walk back through the ride to get out. I actually don’t mind so much when a ride goes tech as you get to see a little of how the ride track goes round and also a little of backstage . Of course, no photos are allowed.

As we came out we were given a free fast pass each that we were told we could use anywhere in HS (remember that!). This wasn’t the old fashioned paper FP that you used to get if a ride went tech. The cast members had a hand held scanner, they scanned our magic bands and said the FP would magically appear.

We decided to head over to Alien Swirling Saucers as that was my plan anyway and it was still EMH so there wasn’t a long wait. I didn’t want to use the free FP here and we just got in the standby line.

This is a fun little ride, not worth waiting long for, but we enjoyed it and at least it didn’t go tech. As we came off it was just after 9am and the park had opened so we decided it was time for breakfast. We stopped at the Joffreys stand by the entrance to the One Man's Dream theatre.

Dave and me both had a Jamaican Cold Brew coffee, these are so good, in the photo it’s the coffee with the dark coffee at the bottom and the cream at the top. Kate had a caramel cold coffee and Mum had a peach iced tea. Dad just had water.

I persuaded Max to have the toy story coffee, but unfortunately this tasted too much like coffee for him so I ended up with most of it, lucky me! It was very sweet but I still managed to finish it.

We shared 3 of the vanilla donuts, these are very tasty and half each was enough.

After our breakfast we went into the Star Wars Character meet and greets area. Chewie had a really long line but both Kylo Ren and BB8 had just a couple of people waiting so we did them both.

Kylo Ren is always pretty fun as he is very menacing and glares at different people.

BB8 I’ve got to be honest I find a bit awkward as he just beeps and so what do you say? We sort of shuffled through, got our photo and then went out the other side pretty quickly. I'm not sure I'd bother with this again.

We were looking around at all the Star Wars memorabilia and enjoyed leaning up against the bar. I like this photo of us all just stood there with the fake blue milk.

We didn’t make it Galaxies Edge as it didn’t open until after we came home (next year!).

I decided it would be a good idea to use the free FP on Tower of Terror. I tried really hard to convince Mum and Dad that they would like it and I sort of think that Dad was up for it but Mum didn’t want to and said she was going to have a look in the shops, so Dad decided to stay with her. It’s a shame as I don’t think it’s any worse than Space Mountain really and they had managed that.

On our way to ToT we stopped at a photopass photographer.

He spotted Dad’s first visit badge (still wearing it) and got Mum and Dad to pose together for a couple of photo’s after the group shot.

We agreed we’d find Mum and Dad after the ride in one of the shops or on one of the benches along the road.

The four of us trundled off to ToT and I was pretty happy as this would be a bonus ToT ride with our free FP. When we got to the cast member by the FP entrance they said we weren’t supposed to use the free FP on ToT as one of the lifts was closed . I said we’d been on Midway Mania and it had broken down and I was really sorry as we weren’t told that there were any restrictions. We were lucky as the cast member let us through Woo hoo!

We’re on the back row, which is my favourite place to be on this ride as I’m not a massive fan of heights so while I don’t mind the ride itself I’d rather not be right at the front when they open the screen and you can see all over HS.

We managed to meet up with Mum and Dad (eventually) it was surprisingly tricky to track them down

We wanted to watch the Beauty and the Beast show as we haven’t seen it for a few years and Mum and Dad like the shows as they can sit down and they won’t get thrown about

We had about 45 minutes until the show started so we did something a bit naughty here I hope I don't lose my Dibb membership.

Mum and Dad were not going to use their free FP and rather than it going to waste I suggested they gave their magic bands to Max and Kate for them to use the FP. I knew the kids would love to go on Rock and Rollercoaster so I said we should ask the cast member at Rock and Roller if they could use the free FP there. Mum and Dad didn’t fancy sitting out in the sun and so, Dave stayed with them and I went round the corner to RnR with the kids. I know it's cheeky, but it's still just 2 people using the FP, ok I know it's not the right 2 people.

We agreed we’d meet up in the stadium for B&B after I grabbed the kids when they came off RnR. I went with them to the FP entrance and explained we had broken down on Midway Mania and got a free FP and asked if it could be used here. The cast member said it was fine, of course they can use it on RnR. So, I said a quick good bye and told them to look out for me at the end and started to walk away.

The cast member called me back and asked why I wasn’t going so I explained I’d used my FP on ToT and it was only the kids who had a FP and then he sprinkled a bit of magic and told me that I should go on with them as they are only kids I was really excited to be able to do RnR with them. I thought it was sweet of him especially as they are not exactly little children and we’ve done single rider for RnR before so it’s not like they need me with them. This morning was turning out well in spite of the ride malfunction first off, actually it was turning out well probably because of the ride malfunction! Plus we hadn’t had any rain yet today! Double bonus

We had a brilliant time on RnR and I only felt a little bit guilty about the kids taking Grandma and Grandad’s magic bands. I’ve just realised I’ve referred to Toy Story Mania as Midway Mania throughout the whole day, I don’t know when they dropped the Midway part of Toy Story Midway Mania but I do know it is just Toy Story Mania now. However, I cannot be bothered to go back and re-type it so I hope everyone knew what I was talking about earlier

As ever I look mental in the photo and Max looks bored! It is a bit rickety but as a magical pixie dust ride I really didn’t mind the head banging from side to side.

We came off literally skipping and went and found the others in the Beauty and the Beast theatre. They had managed to get some pretty good seats and saved enough space for us three.

I’m glad we made time to watch the show this year as it is often one that we skip and it’s a cute little show. The songs are lovely and the cast do a pretty good job, ok so we know it’s no Lion King or Finding Nemo, but still it’s not a bad show.

We’d already agreed that after the show the kids would go back to the resort with mum and dad, while Dave and me grabbed an Uber/Lyft to Discovery Cove to pick up the photos. It was pretty hot already and coming up for midday so the kids were happy to go back for a swim.

The kids showed Mum and Dad how to get back to FQ Kate and mum had lunch. Kate had a meat lovers flatbread and Doritos instead of the drink. Mum had a vegetable flatbread and a cup cake instead of the drink. 2 QS credits used. No photos were taken of the flatbreads, but they did take photos of the crisps and the cake!

The photo was taken at 12.34 so they can’t have waited long for a bus back to the hotel.

Max and Grandad had decided to go straight to the pool and not eat first.

Meanwhile Dave and me were off to Discovery Cove. It cost us just $11.47 to get the Lyft from HS to Discovery Cove. When we arrived I explained to the assistant in the empty check in area that we were here yesterday and that we wanted to buy the photos from the dolphin swim, but as I’d forgotten my credit card we had come back today to pay for them.

They said that they needed to escort us down to the photo shop and then they would escort us back. This was a bit awkward really, I get that as we didn’t have tickets they didn’t want to let us out of their sight but then why not get one of the rep’s from the shop to come to us in reception?

It was all a fairly speedy process and we bought the photos (which you know as you’ve seen them in yesterday’s post). We were then escorted back to the reception area and at 12.29 I went into the Lyft app to get a car to take us back to FQ. This trip home only cost $9.22. So not bad really and we were back in the hotel and having our lunch just after 1pm.

Discovery Cove side comments here...

After the holiday and we had been home a week I was still feeling pretty cross about the photo debacle. So I decided to send them an email telling them about our experience after the dolphin swim and that we had been told rather bluntly that it was a case of pay up now or come back within 24 hours to buy the photos or they would be deleted. In my email I explained how disappointed I was on the day and that I'd if we could pay on line or at a later date, but had been told this wasn’t possible. I ended by asking if they would review their systems and maybe find a way for allowing payments after the day to prevent other people having the same upset as we did. They took almost a month to reply and said that they store the photos indefinitely So it would seem that the information we’d received was inaccurate as we need not have come back the next day and secondly the photo selection process is very complicated and does not support online payment. They ended their response by saying they hoped this outcome was to my satisfaction . Well it wasn’t really, but what else is there to say?

Back to the day at hand.

When Dave and me got back to FQ we were peckish so we both had the bowls of Gumbo I had rice in mine. These are a snack credit each.

These were really tasty and a great lunch.

We also decided we should get a sneaky cocktail from the pool bar as we hadn’t been spotted yet! Dave was the winner here as his cocktail was really yummy, he had the Mai tai on the left and I had the Frose, this was just ok I wouldn't bother again. They came to about $25.

We met up with the others and as Max and Grandad hadn’t eaten we suggested they get something now.

Max had a bacon cheeseburger for lunch and had a muffin instead of the drink. 1 QS.

Dad had some beignets as his lunch, 1 snack credit. I think he is on the hunt for the best value snack credit. He loved them and had again later in the trip as a lunch...not when mum has been around though

After some fun at the pool we went back to the room to get ready for our afternoon/evening at MK. We had our 3 FP booked up for MK and we had dinner at CRT. I was hoping the rain would hold off so that we could watch HEA.

While we were getting ready Dave and me figured the cans in the fridge were not drinking themselves so we had an Angry Orchard cider (me) and a Heineken (him)

We met up at the bus stop at 4pm and the bus arrived within 10 minutes – pretty good There was a torrential downpour of rain while we were travelling to MK, oh dear here we go again . Except no! By the time we got to MK it had stopped and although there were puddles we didn’t get rained on. I was beginning to think our luck had changed as things had gone really well today .

I popped into the Town Square Theatre to sort out the missing Tinkerbell photos and get these added to our MDE account. As I knew pretty well the time they were taken, after Eric had brought the bus to us on Friday and before the dinner at Crystal Palace, it was pretty easy for the cast member to get the photos and put them on our account.

We had all dressed up in our fine clothes for the special meal and of course I wanted to stop for a photo on Main Street with the castle behind us.

Then I was impulsive and decided it was time I fulfilled one of my wishes! I bought one of balloons. I wanted the yellow one and I got it! I know it’s only a balloon but it was lovely walking around MK with it for the rest of the evening. It cost $13, you can pay by cash or credit card but you can’t charge it to your magic band.

I have to say the balloon was fab. I loved that it sat in our room for the whole trip. It lasted well, I thought it would deflate or the helium would leak out and it would stop floating but it didn’t and it was still fully inflated when we left FQ over a week later so I decided to pass on some magic and picked out a little girl at breakfast on our last morning to give it to. I asked the parents if it was ok if I gave her our balloon as we were leaving and I hoped she would enjoy it.

We also got some photos on the pathway at the side of the castle. This was a proper photo shoot with the cast member making us do all sorts of poses.

We went over to our first FP at Peter Pan, this was lovely and Mum and Dad enjoyed it. I wasn’t allowed to take my balloon in, but the cast member tied it up and I got when the ride finished.

It was a little bit drizzly as we came out of PP, but just sort of wet in the air and not enough to bother us and not enough for them to close 7DMT which was our next FP, the cast member at the FP entrance looked after the balloon for me. By the time we had got on the ride the rain had stopped though.

We had a little bit of time before our next FP opened up so we went over to the Big Top to meet Goofy and Donald, then we went back in and met Daisy and Pluto.

I've just realised Dave and Dad are both wearing pink shirts

These were all great meets with barely any wait time. Daisy loved playing with the balloon and was jumping and having a great time.

Pluto was also really good fun and jumping around like dogs do when their owners come home and then organising us to get the perfect photo.

It was fun to be meeting the characters and just all being a bit silly.

It was now time for our 3rd FP which I’d swapped on Friday. Originally it was Winnie the Pooh, but as our FP for Enchanted Tales with Belle was cancelled on Friday I swapped them around and we did Pooh then and I got Belle for today.

Again, I had to leave my balloon at the entrance to the attraction here.

This is an attraction that I really like, on our first trip Max was the Beast, Kate has been the wardrobe and a plate. Dave has been a guard. And this trip Dad was picked to be a guard .

It’s a cute story and I like watching all the little kids have fun enjoying the show and being a part of it.

It was nearly time for our meal at Cinderella’s Royal Table so we slowly walked over there after I’d collected my balloon of course.

This is a meal that the 4 of us have done once before and enjoyed but never felt the need to return to. It's a 2 credit meal and there are so many great restaurants to try out that I haven't wanted to use 2 credits here. However, in the planning of this trip Mum had 3 requests, to swim with dolphins (check), to see the Harry Potter stuff (coming at the end of the trip) and to eat inside the castle. So, we had to come here. This was our first 2 credit meal of the trip.

We checked in at 7pm and didn't have long to wait until we were called through to meet Cinderella.

We settled in our table by the windows on the right side of the lower floor. It was a really good table and I was happy we had a view overlooking the carousel.

Some photos of the menu and table

Even though there were no small children we all had wishing stars.

And we were all given a wand or a sword.

We ordered our drinks, the kids both had cokes. Mum, Dave and myself went with red wine. That's my yellow Mickey balloon behind Kate.

Dad had a sparkling white wine.

In this meal you are allowed a starter, main and a dessert. We did not do well with ordering different things here I'm afraid and researching for the dibb went a bit out the window. For starters the kids both had the charcuterie which they liked, although Max was a bit short changed on the breadsticks as his were much smaller than Kate's

Maybe they were down to their last breadstick so broke one in half for Max

All the adults went for the scallop, singular there was only one! I’ve seen photos in other Dibbers food reports and they seemed to get 2 scallops so I think we were short changed here, maybe they were running out?

It was a lovely scallop, but just one felt a bit stingey. Compared to the fab starters at Tony's this was a bit poor. Dad couldn't help but compare to his mountain of calamare at Tony's. Still, we all enjoyed it and rather than begin stuffed we actually were looking forward to our mains.

Kate chose the fish for her main, it was salmon and she really enjoyed it.

All the rest of us chose the steak. This was so tasty and we were all really pleased with our choices.

Max inhaled his within moments of it arriving, so Mum shared some of hers with him, Dad was feeling a bit put out as he normally gets lucky with her left overs but Max has hollow legs at the moment. Even our server commented that she had never seen anyone eat a steak that quickly.

Mum and Dad were starting to worry that Kate hadn't met the Princesses and had been missed out. I tried to reassure them they are very good at their job and would make sure they came to our table. Sure enough they all started to arrive.

First up Aurora

Then came Max's Magical Moment. Our server Ashely brought him a second steak

he was so surprised

I think he thought it might be a joke and get taken away again

She explained that he clearly wasn't full after his first dinner and she couldn't have him leaving not feeling satisfied so this 2nd steak was on her. He was so happy. Of course he had no trouble eating it all up.

We were all pretty surprised at this I don't think I've seen anyone getting a second dinner before? Obviously food is replaced if it's not up to scratch, but a second meal from loving the meal so much and eating it all very quickly?

Ariel and Snow White came round and Kate had fun meeting them.

Dave and me both had a second glass of wine, later with the bill Ashley only charged for one extra glass though so that was sweet too.

For desserts Dave, Max and me all had the deconstructed cheesecake.

This was yummy, but I think we would all prefer a fully formed cheesecake, gourmet diners we are not!

Mum and Kate had the peanut butter cake, which I was surprised about as neither of them particularly like peanut butter. But they both enjoyed it.

Dad had the sorbet.

Finally we saw Jasmine.

It had been a really special meal and I'm pleased we did it. As we said with the Tony's meal the server can make all the difference. The food here was delicious, Ashley made the experience magical as clearly a 14 year old boy isn't there for the Princesses. She made it for him She had also warned us that we really needed to be out of the castle by around 8.40pm if we wanted to watch HEA or we'd be trapped the wrong side of the castle. So, we settled up the bill and left CRT at just after 8.45pm.

The area between the castle and the carousel was all roped off and the cast members had to let us out.

I wanted to see HEA as we didn't watch it after Crystal Palace as it was raining that night. So I took everyone off to the left, past the Haunted Mansion and then down past Sleepy Hollow.

We were following a lady pushing a buggy and I figured we’d just keep going until we had a decent view from the side of the castle. Well, she just kept walking, there wasn’t really a path and we were all single file. But she kept walking and we kept walking through the people camped out in the hub as far as the bridge that goes to Adventureland. Then the buggy lady stopped and so we stopped with 5 minutes to spare before HEA started.

She offered us the chance to go round her, but I said I was fine where I was. It was the perfect view as we were up on the edge of the pavement behind her and another couple of buggies so we all had a really good view.

I took loads of photos of HEA, I really enjoyed it and we did have a great view.

There goes Tink

We also waited out the crowds and rather than heading off for the bus.

I like the Once Upon A Time projection show (I think that's what it's called) they put on the castle around 20 minutes after HEA. It was very quiet in the hub now. It's Chip being told a bed time story and it's pretty cute.

When we left we had a nice walk to the bus rather than fighting through the crowds.

It had been a great morning at HS with our bonus rides on ToT and RnR. Plus, it was a lovely evening with the characters in Big Top, me getting my balloon, Max getting his second steak, Mum getting to eat inside the castle. We really did get some really magical moments. I was so pleased with the view for HEA it was a fabulous end to the day. We all went home happy, tired, but yes definitely happy it had been a good day.

Statistics
Steps 21,355
Attractions 6 (including the brake down on Midway Mania)

Coming Soon
Next up tomorrow we started out at AK. Of course we had FOP FP again . After a break at the resort we headed over to Yacht and Beach Club to attempt the Kitchen Sink after our failure to finish last year. I did appallingly and did not support the team effort as I only managed 1 and a half bowls Max had 7 . Then we very slowly wandered around World Showcase before heading out to Hoop Dee Doo Revue. After today’s exploits you won't need more than 1 guess to figure out who was picked on by the cast he must have a friendly looking "I want to join in" sort of face.

I'm so glad today improved for you all.

Well done on the extra FP, Disney magic right there.

I am rather disappointed in Discovery Cove's reply though. Surely they should ahve at least apologised for the cast member misinforming you that the pictures would be destroyed!

Sounds like a lovely chilled night in MK and I particularly love the balloon photos.

Ashley sounds fab and I'm sure Max would love to return to CRT now xx

What a wonderful day! Fab start at HS - no shame in using up the FPs and how nice to get a bonus one for you too!

The balloon photos are lovely. Daisy is hilarious! Don’t think we’re allowed balloons at AKL so I’ll have to live vicariously through you as I’d love one too!

Ashley sounds like the perfect server, especially for a teenage boy 😄

Oh that really does sound like a wonderful day! Well done to Ashley for sprinkling some pixie dust in the form of a tasty steak
The response from Discovery Cove was rather disappointing but I’m glad you got your photos sorted / they are so worth it

It was a lovely sunny day, the weather improves and so did everything else.

The response from DC is a bit rubbish really and I was cross about the misinformation, but then it all happened because I forgot my card so I can't moan too much

We did have a lovely chilled out evening in MK, we only did the attractions we had FP for, didn't worry about anything else and my only mission was to watch HEA oh that
view was amazing.

Yes Max did say his favourite place to go back to would be CRT, but I told him I didn't think he would get 2 dinners next time so he changed his mind

Yes I was really happy with getting the freebie bonus rides on Tower of Terror and Rock and Roller. They are fun and it made it a fab morning for the kids as they are less fussed by the shows.

Daisy was funny with the balloon, I didn't know you coudlnt take balloons to AKL, makes sense I suppose with the animals.

Look at your teeny tiny countdown, nearly single digits. Have you started packing?

It really was wonderful. Max couldn't believe his luck. Yes DC aren't very high on my list of places with good customer service at the moment, but still you're right the photos are worth it.

I'm glad to hear you had better weather today. It sounds like a lovely relaxed morning at HS followed by MK. I still love the look on Max's face when he got his extra steak!

What a cheek that the sales people at Discovery Cove told you that they would be deleted when that wasn't the truth. I guess that they probably don't want the option to buy online because then people would have a chance to think things through more thoroughly and actually compare the value of the different packages more carefully, rather than just buying on impulse.

I think maybe we will have to get a balloon for the room next year. One year we got balloons at DLP and brought them home with us. They lasted weeks.

Yes I think it was a lot more relaxed today, of course I had a plan, but it was a lot more chilled and in the evening it was great fun seeing the characters in the big top.

I definitely recommend a balloon for the room, it didn't even look like it was starting to deflate when we left. How lovely that your DLP balloons lasted so long.
