All at Sea: DCL UK Staycation Day 3 - 22 Aug 2021

<<Day 2

This morning began with a flask of coffee being delivered to our room, as ordered last night. Today we planned to eat in Lumiere’s for breakfast, and I had decided this was the day I would wear my Mickey dress. This was specially designed and made for me by Queen Ursula UK – check out her website, she does great stuff for those of us who are more Ursula than Ariel. In fact she went on one of the later staycation cruises herself and even got engaged there!

Once we were seated in Lumiere’s, Peter decided to start with some oatmeal.

I went for Mickey waffles with fruit and some strawberry whipped cream. Sadly the waffles tasted really stale and th e cream just tasted synthetic. I didn't finish.

To follow I had some eggs benedict.

Peter had some sausages and toast to make himself a butty!

Unfortunately, just like last night, we found the food rather on the cold side. We did eat most of it, but it really wasn’t great.

We went through to Shutters to get our digital download code and see our photos on the screen. Then we had a look round the kids’ clubs as they were having an open house session that morning. Obviously as we don’t have children, we have no experience of these clubs, but they do look impressive.

We had seen on the cruise app that magic shots were happening on deck 10, so we headed up there. The family in front of us ducked out at the last minute as their daughter was feeling the effects of the sea a little. I gave them some ginger chews for her, which I always have on board with me. The movement of the ship certainly was more noticeable today, although I was fine so far.

The lady doing magic shots did a great job and we got loads – here’s a small selection.

We then paid another visit to Cove Café. I was feeling the sea a little myself by now, so I took a Stugeron which soon kicked in.

Then we did some shopping – a fridge magnet for my parents, another for my mother-in-law and a pen for my sister-in-law; a Christmas ornament of the Magic for our tree, and a new luggage tag for us. We also bought a DCL shirt for Peter and a Pandora charm for my bracelet – we knew they didn’t have any DCL ones left but we got a park exclusive one of a suitcase, which was nice.

We then decided to have another go at bingo, hosted again by the cheery David. This time we did actually win – but the prize was $61 shared between 4 winners, so we didn’t exactly walk out of there as millionaires! Nice to have won something though.

As it was lunchtime we headed to Cabanas, where we were greeted by our former server Amphie, as well as our head server. It was lovely to be recognised and chatted to, although I hate to think of the long hours the servers have to work. Our head server told us he was very sorry about the cold food issues we had experienced last night and this morning, and that he was personally going to see to it that we had hot food that night!

I haven’t taken any pictures of the buffet, but we got a small selection of food just to ensure we would manage to get through the afternoon’s tequila tasting! I had a glass of ‘Orchard’s Best’ which is the same as POG juice at WDW – pineapple, orange and guava. It was delicious and I really should have had another one!

It was now time to head back to Rapunzel’s Royal Table, but not for a meal this time. There was an opportunity to get some special photos with Rapunzel’s lantern, and also a magic shot with Pascal, so of course we couldn’t resist.

We moved on to Keys for the tequila tasting, where places were laid out for us. They had done everything possible to ensure we were appropriately distanced from other guests, which meant our host had to do a bit more work to ensure he could be heard all over the room.

We each had three different tequilas to taste. The ‘silver’ had been mixed with coffee liqueur and the resulting drink was my favourite.

The ‘reposado’ was next, and we were shown how to do the ‘salt and lime’ accompaniments. There were a lot of funny faces pulled at that point!

It was followed by the ‘añejo’ which was the smoothest, accompanied by orange and ginger.

There were also two margaritas to taste. I can’t say I’m a big fan, but I did learn a lot about what makes a good tequila and which ones to order. Now if only I could remember it all!

Not surprisingly, after the tasting we headed to our stateroom for a little nap while ‘watching’ Dr Strange, before going back to Cove Café for our final lattes there – including the freebie you get when you buy 5 coffees. This time we got a Stitch and a ‘See ya real soon’ on our lattes.

I went back to the room earlier than Peter, so I could get the cases packed. Over the years we have discovered that two people packing is an argument – it’s easier and quicker if one of us does it! By the time Peter came back to the room, our cases were ready, and of course we had made sure we had kept everything necessary in the room for tonight and tomorrow morning. We also filled out our guest satisfaction survey and sorted out the gratuity envelopes for our servers and stateroom host. We flagged down Wibi and gave him his envelope and a bag of Percy Pigs, as we wouldn’t see him in the morning. We saved the others for tomorrow’s breakfast, although we did take our servers some bags of Percy Pigs too as a present that evening.

Tonight’s dinner was in Animator’s Palate.

Those of you who have been on the Magic before will know that there are two different shows that happen here around your meal. For the first one, everything starts in black and white – the décor on the walls and the outfits of the servers. Then Sorcerer Mickey makes an appearance and everything turns to colour. The second show involves guests making a drawing of themselves, which then comes to life and dances with classic Disney characters.

For these cruises, they had combined elements of both shows. While there was no Sorcerer Mickey, the room did go from black and white to colour during the evening. And they did the drawings, which is always just a jaw-dropping experience. I particularly love the way they include your signatures in the credits at the end.

We had been promised hot food tonight, and I’m happy to report that they delivered. I started with the black truffle pasta purseittes – pasta purses filled with truffle-scented cheese in a champagne sauce.

Peter chose the baked potato and cheese soup. This was so delicious he persuaded me to try some and I immediately ordered one for myself. You could really taste the crispy baked potato, it was such an amazing flavour.

I then chose the lemon and herb marinated chicken breast, served with sour cream mashed potatoes, roasted root vegetables and a grain mustard jus.

Peter went for the grilled tuna steak with fingerling confit potatoes, caponata, sun-dried tomato pesto and aioli.

For dessert I had the lemon icebox pie (which was basically a lemon curd style cheesecake).

Peter had the cookies and cream sundae.

I think this was our favourite meal this time. The combination of fresh, zingy flavours, hot food (thank you head server!) and the fantastic show going on around us made it a very special evening.

After dinner we had some more photos in the atrium.

Then it was time to put our cases outside the stateroom door for collection, before going to Fathoms to see Vivienne Carlyle, the lady who had played Mother Gothel in last night’s Tangled show. She was performing a short set of Disney-related songs and was very impressive.

Following this, we went to the Walt Disney Theatre for that night’s show, which was Dreams: An Enchanted Classic. This involved a young girl meeting Peter Pan and various other Disney characters, as she learned about the power of dreams. It was basically an excuse to string together some classic Disney numbers, but it worked well and all the performers were great.

We dropped by Guest Services to sort out paying our bill and to put a deposit down on a placeholder for a future cruise. This means you get 10% off your next cruise, and can get a refund if you don’t use it. It was at this point that we discovered we must have set up the app wrong, because we weren’t able to do the placeholder. The CM took our details and said someone would email soon to sort it out – which they did, and we now have a placeholder. (We just hope we can use it by August 2023!)

Once we had sorted this out we spotted Stitch at a balcony and shouted ‘Aloha’ to him. And then took a couple more photos against some backgrounds for good measure.

Incidentally, I have to mention that tonight was the nearest I have ever got to Disneybounding. The red jacket was a nod to Sorcerer Mickey's cloak and the gold headband was a reference to the gold rope that ties it up. I did get quite a few appreciative reactions to the dress, including a little girl who saw me walking through the Promenade Lounge and exclaimed "Wow!"

There was just time for a drink on our verandah before bedtime – once we had moved our towel animal, which tonight was a cat. We’d had a very full day, and were soon enjoying our last night in that wonderfully comfortable bed. Join us tomorrow for a last breakfast, the journey home and some final thoughts.
