We did NYC and DC a few years ago and drive between the two. It was a fantastic holiday!
We stayed near DuPont circle and it was close to everything - a walk to Georgetown and easy to get around on the Metro. There is so much to see and do… the monuments around the National Mall are amazing and you could easily spend more than a day just wandering between them. The Smithsonian museums are also brilliant - I’d suggest some research so you see the ones that interest you most. We went to the museum of American history which was fascinating. We also visited the Capitol, the Supreme Court, the library of congress and the national archives. I’d thoroughly recommend all of them. We also did a bus tour of the monuments at night which gave a unique perspective. It’s a fantastic place and a trip I’ll definitely repeat at some point. ETA you don’t need to keep the car in either city if that’s how you choose to get between them… parking fees are extortionate, so we just hired the car for the time we needed it and dropped it off when we arrived. OH my goodness where do I even start.
The Smithsonian's are all brilliant and free as is the Zoo. si.edu/museums Georgetown is gorgeous to walkabout in and just littered with movie info from St Elmos Fire and The Exorcist georgetowndc/guide/g...n-movie-sites/ Alexandria also known as Old Town is also lovely to walk around in and great for food.visitalexandriava/ National Harbor is another great place to see and you can get a water taxi from Old Town across the Potomac to it. I was there late summer one year and they had Peter Pan on teh outdoor movie and music etc. Its very very pretty and I believe there are outlet shops there or nearby but I didnt go to them nationalharbor/things-to-do/ Finally for a bit of retail; therapy or movies etc there is the Huge Tysons Mall tysonscornercenter/ All of these things are accessible on public transport mainly on the metro lines. Have a great time planning! |

Am I best getting an Uber from Dulles airport? Think it’s about $55 to our hotel.

Thank you all. Reading all your advice is getting me excited now. As was a bit nervous and thought we had made a mistake.
We have 2 days in Philly. Can anyone suggest things to do there. Thanks in advance. |

Hi! We booked flights/hotel/car as part of a package so I can’t tell you how much that specific element was, sorry. I think booking from here gets UK travellers better insurance. Ours was from Alamo - we collected in NYC from 77th street (near the natural history museum) and dropped it off at Union Station in DC. We only kept the car for a day.
I’ve just found the link to a quick trip summary I did which might be useful - https://dibb.in/7868947 I’m excited for you! |

Should be cheap to fly though …….can you get work to make your flight open jaw out to Washington and back from Nashville so you only need to do the journey one way ?
