We have a holiday cottage north of London wednesdaycottage - shoot me now if I am not allowed to mention this. It takes 34 mins by train to Liverpool St and 50 mins to the sights but we are in the countryside so you can breathe when you get back.

Don't forget hotwire for London hotels, especially if there are just two of you travelling. You can bag some real bargains, we managed to get the Holiday Inn Express at Earls Court for $39 a night which with taxes included only cost us just over £30 a night. Not bad for London eh?
Even if you want something a bit more upmarket you will be catered for, especially around the Kensington area. Use betterbidding and select the Other Countries forum to get insider knowledge and help with any potential hotels. Remember with Hotwire you only find out the hotel details once you have confirmed the booking. Nothing is guaranteed with Hotwire (there are always new hotels being added daily) but with a combination of amenity icons, location, price and rating on Tripadvisor you should have a very good idea of which hotel you are getting. A 4* hotel on Hotwire in Kensington can often be cheaper than a fleapit budget hotel. Give it a go. Addition 23/4/09. Just booked a Sunday night in June on Hotwire for London and got the 4* Holiday Inn Camden Lock for $49 on Hotwire. As I said, give it a go, there is some serious value to be had in London. Edited at 08:55 PM. Reason: Addition |

I just posted this as a reply to another thread but might be relevant to this thread also. If you are looking for a pocket sized guide to London, try Lonely Planet's Encounter series. They are just £5.00 at the moment with free postage, enter LPMENC5 in the promo code section.

Don't know if this is the right place to post about hotels but if not sorry.
I am just back from a few days in London and stayed in the Hilton Metropole, I got a good deal of £80 a night for a double deluxe room with breakfast. I booked it when they had their sale on. The room was ok, nothing special but ok for the price. I am now looking at taking DD for a couple of days for her 21st in July and the price is now £124 for a standard room with no breakfast. If the deluxe was ok what will the standard be like? Obviously having just come back from there I now feel I know my way around from that hotel and it is also near Paddington for the Heathrow Express. Can anyone recommend a good hotel, not too expensive but clean and modern around Hyde Park area or with walking distance of Oxford Street? Thanks

Hubbie and I stayed in London for a few nights for his 40th. We booked a Top Secret Hotel with Last Minute.com - although you can pretty much work out what hotels they are with a bit of digging about on their wesite.
Fab hotel, upgraded to The level (free alcohol in the lounge every night ). Excellent price, friendly staff and generally a really good deal. (I picked it ). Next to Regents Park, 10 minutes from Oxford Street etc on the tube. Deffo recommend.

When we went last year Londontown.com were also doing Top Secret Hotels. We got a family room at the 5* Langham Hotel for just £110. It was fantastic! I dont know if they still do the Top Secret hotels but hope it is helpful to someone if they do xx

I am going to London at the end of June to celebrate my graduation with my parents. We are there for 2 days and are going to see Wicked (I have wanted to see it for ages! ). Which of the touristy things do you recommend and what are a waste of time/money. I'm not that bothered about the London Eye tbh it seems expensive and a bit boring
