Psychology is a science subject surely?

Psychology cuts across both the science and arts world. You can study for a BA or BSc at degree level.

At A level it is seen as an essay subject rather than a science. Though it is non-facilitating, the fact that it is an essay subject is valued by some universities.

Universities do consider Psychology to be a Science subject. My DD needs a science A Level for her chosen degree course and picked Psychology in preference to Biology. She is currently in year 12 and although it is very theory orientated she is enjoying it.

It is accepted as a science for the uni courses my daughter has applied for. She need 1 science and psychology is the only science she took.

It’s known as a ‘soft’ science as opposed to the likes of physics & chemistry know as ‘hard’ sciences.

My daughter is studying it for A level. She is going to study Biology for her degree which needed a second science so she chose Psychology as she had not studied it before and thought it looked interesting. It is incredibly interesting but there is an awful lot to learn and memorise; different types of psychology, different treatments, research methods, names of psychologists and knowing which psychologist worked on which experiment and theories. My daughter is finding it her most difficult subject. She is pleased she took it, and it works well with her Biology so has been useful

Physics is her strongest science so that’s good I suppose. I do think she will enjoy it, it’s just a fear of the unknown for her

I’m a teacher of psychology I also examine and team lead markers for one of the exam boards as well and I write papers for the Btec psychology spec which is new so if you need any info just message me

I think one of the most important things is finding out what exam board it is with I know ocr is very difficult now with pearson in the middle and aqa slightly easier and also has the most resources available for students and teachers

It is content and theory heavy and you do need to be fluent at extended writing and being able to form a cohesive, fluent and consistent argument for those extended questions

You also do need to have a good understanding of maths and statistics now especially since the new specs came out

My DD opted for Psychology, Law and Business Studies (was originally history but swapped at the beginning of Year 12 for Business). She enjoys her psychology class, is getting good marks and it seems like a really interesting and in depth subject.
