As we have seen recently that old ''it was only a joke' will not cut it anymore for people to hide behind.

Not really sure why periods are even funny about a male or female and why is one more appropriate to 'joke' about than the other?

I assume you’re talking about Danny Boyle, Yes it was clearly a joke with no racism intended, but very poor taste and not even funny. Don’t think he deserved to be sacked though, maybe suspended for a while.

The Period “joke”, again inappropriate and not funny, but no reason to get so wound up.
Obviously more inappropriate to joke about a woman, because it could have been true.

i think sometimes we have become a little sensitive about things. We had an email at work the other day about banter and how sometimes what we think as appropriate, isn't to other people and to think before we say anything. I work in a hospital and we use banter between staff to survive emotionally through some pretty tough times, i would never want to upset anyone though!

If this was a one off attempt at a joke i'd let it go but if it was sustained and part of a chauvinistic approach then i would have to deal with it - either by raising it to the appropriate person or i'd take my expertise elsewhere.

No it's not acceptable - I just don't understand why people want to make any comment to someone knowing that it is a derogatory term (not you as I appreciate this was an example)
