I.B S. Sufferers following FODMAP Diet?

Hi. I have a close relative who appears to suffer with I B.S. she has been on a very strict Gluten Free diet for years and a specialist reckoned that if she hadnt been doing this she wouldve been classed as coeliac.

Now her I.B S. Symptoms are getting so bad they are starting to affect the quality her life and becoming so restrictive to what she can do in everyday life due to the awful embarrassing and painful side affects.

I have done some googling and found lots of references to following a FODMAP diet.

Are there any Dibbers who are aware of this and follow it?

If so, how do you find it and can you summarise it in a nutshell how you use the information and make it work for you.

I purchased two books from amazon for her but her learning style is not suited to reading and absorbing information, so I have now been tasked with reading the books and verbally giving her the information in summary form.

Many thanks

I’ve been following a low FODMAP diet and avoiding foods classed as night shades following gallbladder removal and years of IBS. My diet was designed by a nutritional therapist and that along with several supplements and avoiding a lot of diary and gluten I am seeing the benefits of this, I can pm you what she suggested.

Also to add it was a lot of trial and error to see what I could tolerate and it’s crucifying when it’s not suitable but I now know what I can and cannot tolerate.

Have sent you a pm with hopefully some helpful things on, it is unfortunately trial and error and keeping a detailed food diary helps, and I was told to keep a note of any bowel movement, any pain, irritation etc
I am just at a point now where I can eat without any reaction, eating out in future I would have to have prior notice of what the ingredients are.
My daily supplements include a pro biotic tablet, multivitamin, liver support and bile support too.
Feel free to ask any questions xx

I would advise you to see a qualified dietician who will explain how to follow a fodmap diet as it is quite complicated until you get the hang of it. There is lots of misguided information out there on Google which is misleading and often directed towards encouraging you to buy special foods which aren't necessary. Definately keep a food diary before you start including any symptoms associated with what you eat and include how your mood is and if you have any stress at that time. I followed fodmap and did identify some triggers. On a negative note, I found I became quite obsessed with everything I put in my mouth and started to feel the diet was causing more stress than it was worth.
