London to Hawaii flight prices

How much would you expect to pay for the following in economy at the start of May, flying out on a Saturday and back on a Sunday or Monday? Is £1000pp about right?
  • London to Maui (OGG), one stop (the shortest flight, 16-18hrs)
  • Honolulu to London, one stop shortest route again

We will also need to fly Maui to Honolulu in the middle but won’t worry about this for a little longer.

Also, can you use avios to upgrade part of an indirect cash flight if we book indirect flights with BA? I’ve seen flights that stop in Seattle both ways so wondered if we could pay in cash for them and then use avios if we want to upgrade the LHR to Seattle part on the way out and Seattle to LHR part on the way back (which are BA operated flights)? I presume we couldn’t upgrade the whole indirect flight as the other half of it is Alaska Airlines!

I can share what we paid which was:

£750 return economy out PE back (LHR-LAX-HNL out Then OGG-LAX—LHR return) October.

The other time we used miles for Upper outbound to Seattle and booked the Hawaii leg separately but I think the return equivalent would have been about £350 in economy (roughly). October again.

I endlessly checked flight prices, monitored Jack’s flight club etc to achieve those prices.

My dates were fixed and we booked internal flights between islands separately (Hawaiian air - join the club - reduces the cost of a checked suitcase by 50%)

All our flights are always flying out on a Saturday, flying back on Thursday from Hawaii to arrive back in the U.K. on Saturday morning.

I don’t know about Avios but you could book the BA leg to SEA separately and overnight there and fly out in the morning on a separate booking (this would reduce the risk of missing the separately booked flight). But hopefully you can do it by a better way !

I think if you are desperate to get them locked in you should still target lower than £1k in May. I would say £800 or so would be a good place to have as a target.

I wasn’t actually intending to go twice in a short time but I found the flights for such a good price it seemed a good idea !

I don’t blame you! I’d be very happy with £800pp... that might give us another night at Aulani

You may remember I was planning our honeymoon last year and you helped me a lot then. We were supposed to go in June this year but moved the wedding to end of April next year followed by Hawaii still... excited to finally book something for it!

For the internal flight you have Hawaiian and now also Southwest. About £90. You'll want to fly out of main airport Kahului unlesss you are staying over in the NE/Kaanapali of the island because the smaller airport Kapalua Airport on that side of the island is one road in/out and if there's a traffic jam/crash etc you are stuck.

Thank you We were considering the other airport as we will be over by Kaanapili so will keep in mind about the road!

If you're over that way then you're fine. We stayed in Wailea and on the day we were flying that one road up to Kaanapali was backed up all the way to the freeway. We would have missed the flight but if you're staying there then it's prob you're best bet as you could face the same issue driving down to Kahului, If you do end up booking from Kahului leave early! The airport is all open/no walls anyway so it's not a bad place to be an hour early.
