Thanks for replying, I am expecting the first few weeks to be difficult but I know it’s for the best. How are you now?

Hello,

I’m a Ward Sister on an Orthopaedic ward. My advice would be to get moving as soon as the sensation is fully back in your leg. Make sure you do this with the assistance of staff on your ward and not on your own. Even transferring out of bed to the commode is a good start.

Take your analgesia regularly and in particular don’t miss a dose of Paracetemol.

If you need any other info I’d be happy to help

I’m fab now ! Definitely recommend the recliner seat if you can hire one for a few weeks, Also a pair of silky pj bottoms to make it easier to slide your leg across the bed and my physio made me a “sling” type thing to slip around my foot to help lift it up, keep up with the physio, but don’t over do it, there’s a Facebook group called young hip replacements(uk) which is really helpful as well, sleeping on your back and not being able to cross or bend your legs for the first couple of weeks was uncomfortable, the only restriction I have now is no breast stroke when I go swimming

Just thought of something else! My Wife says when sleeping on your side in the first few Months you don't want the operated leg crossing over the leg you are lying on. She bought a pillow like an elongated cushion so not that thick and slept with that between her knee area

JML are advertising a knee pillow that looks good. Maybe worth checking one out in the shops.

Edit. Like a previous poster she had Tramadol given to her but refused to take it and instead just used Paracetamol.

Thanks everyone for your messages. I will definitely take them all on board and look at getting the pillow suggested and look at chairs etc. I haven’t been told anything yet about physio but I will write it on my list of questions to ask.

I think I had to sleep on my back for a few weeks which I was not used to but when you get tired you fall asleep anyhow and I had a body pillow or a heavy pillow either side of me

Hi

I had an injury to my hip ligaments during pregnancy which led to me having my hip replaced nearly 18 years later!

I was on a LOOOONG NHS list to even see a consultant so I went private to get my xrays etc done and the diagnosis.
Then I went on another LOOONG long wait for the surgery - so - long story short - I went abroad and had it done privately.

Yes, I was very brave but I did a TON of research and spoke in person with many happy ex-patients at (long) length!
I had a recovery and rehab stay in a private health spa after too!

16 months on, I forget I've had it done!
The recovery was SOOO much quicker than I ever dared to imagine.

My surgery was lateral, the surgeon was an expert in this method, (smaller scar, no cutting of the ligaments so quicker recovery) not posterior but not anterior. I had a choice of implant too so chose a longer lasting one, hopefully never need changing.
You can hardly see a scar.

I'm glad I had it done in December 2019 or I'd very likely still be on the waiting list now, because of covid raising it's head just after that and I would have been wheelchair bound by now for sure

It's life changing surgery for sure - A true medical miracle.

Feel free to ask me or PM me any questions!

Get as fit as possible before surgery, if you smoke please try to stop .Don't wear slippy slippers get shoes/trainers safer to walk about in than badly fitting slippers. Take regular pain relief don't delay it thinking "it's not too sore just now" as pain will deter you from moving. Do what the physio asks, move your arms, deep breaths etc. Drink plenty fluids, eat well. And remember it will be so worth it.
