Just booked now. BA were coming in at the best price -it seems they are offering 2 days free for rentals over 5 days. We have booked a Ford Escape for 11 nights out of LAX and returning it to LAS for £230, and as a BA Exec Club member DW is an additional driver free of charge. Most other companies were priced at least £50 dearer for similar vehicles.

That's a good price, BA prices are quite good at the moment aren't they. We've booked Alamo/brits, Hyundai Santa Fe, 16 days for £412, but now we're thinking of keeping the car in San Francisco and the prices have shot up so don't know what to do.

We will be flying from LAS to SFO, but looking at the price of a cab or limo from and back to the airport, it could actually be cheaper to rent a car (have seen them for just over £100 for our 5 days) given that we have free parking at the Cow Hollow! Decisions, decisions...

I was dreading the drive from SFO in to San Francisco last year (stayed at the Columbus Motor Inn) as we landed at about 3pm just as rush hour begins, but it was fine. We did get caught in the traffic jams, but it was moving, not like LA, and the route is straight forward. And like you as we've got free parking, if we have a car and we want to go for a drive out we can.

May well do a summary of trip. Or is it a Summery Trip as we're booked for August?

And the final pice of the jigsaw - finally booked accommodation in Marina del Ray at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Managed to get two nights free using Hilton Honors points, and booked the other four nights at a Hilton Honors discounted rate. Hoping that a few more stays in sunny Glasgow at the Hilton there will let me get another one, possibly two, nights free.

And yet more changes!

Realised we could make better use of our Hilton Points in San Francisco (with rooms coming in at almost $600/night ) so cashed in some Amex Rewards points for Hilton points, and having rebooked the Marina deal Rey property paying for the full 6 nights (fully refundable), now have a free stay at the Hilton Union Square in SF for our final 4 nights.

It is somewhat nearer to the sights than the Cow Hollow Inn (which was fully cancellable with Expedia), and has the bonus of a swimming pool in case it gets too hot!

Also managed to book M&G parking at Manchester with a 25% discount thanks to a post here on the dibb. Still more expensive that previous years prices, but still under £4/day equivalent.

Now all I need to do is stop looking and tweaking things

Hold that thought!

Here we are, just 9 weeks away from setting off, and more changes!

First of all - flights. The beauty of using Avios/VA Miles is that you can cancel if a good fare offer appears. Having had several alerts set up for both PE and Business between Manchester and LAS, LAX and SFO, a week ago up popped PE flights MAN-LHR-SFO returning SFO-MAN direct for just over £700 each.

After a short debate with DD and DW, the flights were booked thus releasing our miles for another time.

With flying into SFO, we have had to cancel the great deal we got with BA/Avis , but have managed to get a full-size car (not unfortunately an SUV) for only slightly more.

With having the the drive down to Marina del Rey, we have booked the Cottage Inn by the Sea at Pismo Beach for one night to break up the journey.

We also found a one bed condo in MdR on hotels.com at a rate comparable with using Airbnb etc, so we have booked this for five nights (Friday to Wednesday), before continuing with our original plan of travelling to Vegas, then flying back up to San Francisco and the flight back home.

The only potential further change is to our Las Vegas accommodation. Having rebooked at our Hilton Grand Vacations property, it is about 1-1/2 miles from the likes of the Bellagio Fountains, so currently scanning the various hotel sites for something nearer.

Fingers crossed, these should be the final changes...
