Yes, I remember this it was sadly following the death of a child with an active social media presence and couldn't get at or save any of it - don't know what the outcome was, but very sad.

It's what started me down the line of a famy account, but hadn't clocked that it would all go as it is a connected account so have to start again...

But something to be aware of - plus my DH and all of the kids will lose thier personal email accounts because I set them up. I need to disassociate the accounts somehow and give them.remote acces to the famy drive.

I’ve had to deal with similar following the loss of my husband last year. He was fairly organised and I had a list of passwords but it’s been time consuming dealing with it all

I'm just not worrying about any of it! Once I'm gone DH can sort it all out or not I won't be around to care. Cruel but he is not in the least interested in most of my stuff, let alone the only 2 Forums I happen to be on (if I should suddenly never post again you will all know I am gone) I am on Face Book but not in my own name or birthday & my Privacy settings are such that most have no idea I am on there anyway. My passwords are mostly all the ones set up by Google Chrome. DH would have no idea how to even open my 2 laptops, netbook or desktop anyway.
All the information he would need to know that concerns us both is in files in my home office, he does know that.

I have a unique email address and password (high complexity and length) for every site.

Ours is done in a specific way that does not make it obvious as to what that master password is for and kept in a safe in case it is needed for whatever reason.
We had the problem recently where we didn't know the password to get into FIL's laptop, let alone get into the password manager on that laptop. We did eventually work it out (we had a reasonable idea of what the password was in the first place).

As already mentioned, plenty of people use their fingerprints or facial recognition to get into their devices. There's usually a back-up code that can also be used but it would need the person to provide that code to their next-of-kin for them to get into the device in the first place.

And this doesn't just affect those above a certain age. People can die at any point in their lives.

Yeah, but what if your DH goes first and you have to deal with his online accounts - assuming he has any online accounts of any type.

TBH, I wouldn't really be bothered about DW's Facebook and Twitter accounts if she went before me - those can be left to stagnate. It's more about how to get into her devices, email accounts, ebay account, maybe banking accounts (although those would probably be dealt with in the more old-fashioned way).

The bank accounts are probably the most straightforward!

No problems at all there, I set everything up for him in the first place As for his FaceBook thing most of his 'friends' are my friends anyway
All other accounts are sorted by me. If I do go first our FA will deal with all my stuff - easy peasy

That will no doubt go most of the way to getting into your safe!

I do not like password managers, what is the point of having all your carefully crafted passwords stored in one container that only requires one password to be breached and they have them all?

Password managers are far safer than most peoples manual method, by far. Use the right password manager and the company providing it does not know the password. It is a personalised encrypted database which all they can see is that encrypted blob file. It has 2 factor authentication against it, so even if you did get the password you would not be able to access it.

I am a certified ethical hacker, so know more than a thing or two about technology & security.

You are far more vulnerable in not using a good password manager than not. There is no way you could remember hundreds of complex passwords by memory, so without one you are either re-using a password (no matter how complex) or writing it down somewhere.

It only takes one site to be hacked and any re-used passwords are compromised. Even worse if you use the same email or username across those sites as well.
Most popular password in the world... “123456” followed by “password”

My friend has really complex passwords linked to a range of email addresses all saved into an excel document called, yes you guessed it... passwords

Never heard of an ethical hacker but sounds fascinating.

On the password manager is there a particular one you would recommend?

Are they online or on your machine. So if the laptop was lost or nicked you could go into the password manager elsewhere and change it / update your records ? Can more than one person access it ?

Lastly (possibly😉 ) - is there a particular one you would recommend ?

An ethical hacker is essentially a hacker who only tries to break into systems they have been given permission to try. So testing security for the good of the owner or organisation.

Personally I use lastpass and have been using it for years now. But it is not free for all the things I use it for, such as the ability to share passwords with family.

Things have moved on and many browsers now have built on password managers and it may be enough for most to use one of these, at least to start with. Google Chrome for example has one built in. It has a password generator built in as well to make complex passwords.

For a password you really want something complex like a minimum length of 14, with upper and lower case, numbers and symbols. Something like Iv*aodEo4&LbVZ

The first stage is really to make sure every site you use has its own unique complex password. Even if you use the same email or username for all sites this reduces your risk significantly.

It is even better if you can use a different email address for each site as well, but that does mean having your own domain, so too much for many to do.

Now you will need a master password for either the browser or password manager. This is something you probably need to be able to remember. But it still needs to be complex. One way to do that is for it to be a phrase with complexity added in. For example. W0u!dY0uGu3ssTh!sP@ssw0rd or you could use something like !.Have.Been.to.Florida.10.Times the first is better as it does not have dictionary words but the later is still secure.

That first stage of changing every password to a unique one is a great first step and takes time to do. I would start there and maybe use the browser as your initial password manger.

There is a write up on how secure Chrome is for this and some additional security to set at cybersecuritymagazine/8-...20admin%20pass.
