It is amazing how likeable Michael Portillo is now as a TV presenter. His programmes are really good. So different from the persona he portrayed as a politician. Ed Balls is the same. If only people could be themselves when they are/become politicians.

I don’t know but it was all a bit bizarre. There were certain questions we were ‘advised’ against asking and it was the same people on the audience who were chosen to put their points across despite a wide range of people putting their hand up to speak. I became a bit disillusioned after that.

Well, they pay some people who know at least two languages (one of them English) a fair wage to express the sense of words from another language into English (and vice versa) for those people who don't speak English. I think that's how it works.
The NHS spends less than 0.01% of it's total spend on translators - so it's a fairly tiny amount. If somehow the NHS no longer had any need for translators whatsoever it would make very little difference to the NHS's budget. Of course, the NHS needs translators not just for immigrants but also for the millions of visitors we get to the UK every year. At least those immigrants do pay for those translators in the form of taxes - on average they each contribute more than the rest of us do. Perhaps we should shut down our £200+ billion tourism industry and stop the rest of those bloomin' foreigners from ever visiting us?
