I much preferred my old Dyson but I got a Shark because every one raves about them.

Same problem here

I think there are two things - battery or mains.
A battery vacuum will never do the job of a mains vacuum - especially if you have carpets.
We have a Miele mains vacuum and its great - we use this for a "proper clean". And we have. Dyson V11 for every day use (we have all hard floors). We tested both the Shark and Dyson and felt the Dyson was better. Our friends went for the Shark - but are frustrated as it seems to pick up dirt properly going forward. The advantage of the Shark is that the shaft bends in the middle making it easier to vacuum under furniture.

Another vote for shark. Had mine almost two years. Over Christmas the brush stopped working (ran over some cotton and got jammed). Filled in a questionnaire online and received a new floor nozzle in less than a week. Excellent customer service.

I haven’t found a cordless cleans as well I want it to - I have one somewhere (unless I binned it in my move) and stick to my Miele plug in as I know it sucks all that pesky dust that attacked my asthma . An expensive hoover but without any doubt the best I have ever owned or used. Light and almost silent too (just needs an extension lead)

Miele Cat & Dog up upstairs which is all carpet. Until yesterday a Bosch cordless for downstairs which is great on floors but rubbish on stairs. Yesterday got a John Lewis cordless and I am amazed at how good it is. I will still use the Miele for upstairs and deep cleaning but the JL one will do the everyday stuff including the stairs and best of all the car.
