One of my sons wears something very similar under his hard hat in the winter

My brothers all had these hand knitted balaclavas. Mine was a bonnet that had loops all over it.

Yep. Had the matching mittens my mum knitted too, joined with string through the arms of your coat so you didn't lose them!

I started work on building sites in 1962 before the days of safety boots so I bought some brand new wellies.

I wondered why I was only walking about 12" with every step. So I untied them.

We were just talking about the winter of 63 yesterday! The cold!
No central heating, coats upon coats on the bed at night, ice on the inside of the window (Jack Frost), getting the coal fire going in the morning with the Newspaper!
The snow lay for months, river froze.

Eee imagine them surviving it today!🤣🤣

And yes mum would knit those for us as well.
