Intersting replies! I will see what they say about being only 1 in office as at the moment we are only 1 person in most days. I suspect they have had a warning about it as it was on our daily email!

Playing music at a hair salon via a CD player is also not allowed unless you have purchased a license. Similar as for playing music on a radio.

DD used to do synchronised swimming and we had to purchase a license to play the music she performed to in her competitions.

This is nothing new.

As per the link 123 posted earlier, I believe it's based on the floor area and not the number of people listening to it. So even if there's only one person in the office, your employer still needs to purchase a license if the music is played out loud legally.

Bit stupid imho. Worlds gone mad
You are allowed to play live radio in commercial presmises but you just need a license to do so. It's classed as a public performance and is a fair way to compensate the creators and owners of the music you (or your employees) are listening to.

All shut now anyway! But worth knowing for the future.

I stream the radio through my PC and have earphones. If the phone rings I just take off the earphones, or if I get a teams call I just pause the radio.

I love the fact that we don't have music in my workplace. No distractions...

I think there’s an exception for NHS and if music is used. When we looked into a licence for us to use music for Pulmonary rehab we were exempt
We double checked when one of my friends who owns a Wool shop had a visit and was fined for not having the relevant licence

It seems unfair when you pay such a ridiculous amount for a BBC licence at home. It should allow you to listen anywhere. I do remember that when I worked for HMRC we were not allowed radios there because of it.

The number of people listening is taken into account. I go round the building to see which offices have the radio on and how many are in that office. Then I have to declare that on the forms. We have just had the renewal through and I have requested a rebate as the offices have been closed since March and the warehouse have only 4 of the 22 people in. It seems unfair that we have to pay the full amount.

Does the radio not pay to play the music? If the individuals were in their car, they wouldn’t need a license. If those same 4 people are in an office, they do. How do the creators of this music get their ‘cut’? How can anyone know that a particular tune has been listened to by how many people? I totally disagree with this license.
