Florida Keys - in August
Have any of you been to the Keys in August?
I’m desperate to go and we are starting to plan our summer 2021 holiday at the moment, we’ve found a villa which we are booking for two weeks so we can do the parks etc but wanted a 3rd week doing something else. I know the heat will be intense and I think we can handle that but I don’t know if I should risk it knowing it’s hurricane season. Any thoughts? Thanks |

In August 2018 we did a road trip from Miami then onto Fort Lauderdale for 4 nights. We then drove across alligator alley to Naples for 3 nights. From there we went to Key Largo for 2 nights, then to Marathon for 2 nights and then to Key West for 4 nights. We loved Key West and did loads there, yes it was hot and humid but our hotel Pier House (on Duvall st) had a pool and also it’s own mini beach with a bar and restaurant. We did have a few afternoon showers during our trip but no worse than the ones we have experienced in Orlando. I must add that we only travel in school holidays so are used to the August heat. After leaving Key West we stopped at Tavernier for 2 nights before spending our last 4 nights in Miami. We would love to return to Key West, however we enjoyed everywhere stopped along the way!

Thank you, that sounds like a fantastic trip!
We are looking at staying at the postcard inn which too has its own beach and gorgeous pool so we thought we could chill out there knowing it’ll be so hot. We’d do the journey to Orlando in two days stopping to take in the sights. I’m just wary of paying lots of money knowing it’s hurricane season, it’s that ‘what if’ going around in my head. |

although Officially hurricane in August, I think the season really picks up in September. To be safe do the Keys earlier in your trip. And stay on the ocean side for more of a breeze.

We've been to Key West four times in late July/early August and loved it everytime. It's one of my favourite places on earth!
I'd definitely book a hotel with a pool though, as it is so, so hot! Duval Street is fab, can recommend Fury Water adventures for snorkelling and other water based activities.

We’re going this summer! Flying into Miami, driving over to Naples for 3 nights then 2 nights each in Key Largo, Key West and Marathon, followed by 3 final nights in Miami. Getting really excited now, planning some snorkelling in each of our Keys locations. All the hotels/guest houses are pricey, but I’m sure it will be worth it.

It is very hot but that didn’t put us off.
We went from Aug 16th I think and didn’t see a drop of rain until we made our way up to Orlando later on in the holiday. I’d recommend the Southernmost guesthouse. It’s really well placed and spotless! It has a tiny pool but you can use the larger pool at the resort next door
