Out of date bacon, safe?

Hi

I've just noticed in my fridge (which is particularly bare at the moment) has a pack of unopened smokey back bacon but the date on it is 16 Jan... not sure how I missed this, but I did.

Colour looks okay, is it safe to eat it? If so, I may cook it at lunchtime.

LIke EssexSue I would open and sniff it but probably would use it as its cured

P.S. I cook my bacon in the oven at 220c as I like it extra crispy ie cremated as my family call it so nothing could survive that blasting .

Does it pass the sniff test? If so, I would eat it.

Even if it’s ok I couldn’t eat it,but I’m one that can’t eat anything with that same day date on,so the last day I would have eaten it is the 15th.
Not the best answer for you lol!

Yea I think you may be right, always hard to tell with smokey bacon because it already has a strong smell! Will open it later when we take a lunch break.

I had a pack this week that was 6 days past its sell-by, it looked and smelt great when I opened it and tasted delicious with a fried egg in a sandwich.

I've heard tell of people (in the old days) hanging a flitch of cured bacon in a larder or kitchen and cutting pieces off as needed until it was gone. They were brave people pre-fridge days but then that's what curing and smoking were all about.

I remember a time when stuff didn't have dates so you did tend to just use your eyes and nose.

I can't believe I have turned into someone who says things like that! Blame lockdown.
