DD started on Monday - she had a seminar and meeting with her personal tutor.
I was worried for her as she’s started year 2 at a different uni but her main worry was driving there and not getting lost! She was really happy coming home, even with the social distancing she managed to chat with some fellow students. Unfortunately all the indoor spaces are blocked off so during their break, they had to stand outside in the cold! The rest of the week is all on-line and she’s not sure about next week yet. All in all, she feels really happy about transferring which in turn makes me happy 😃

That’s wonderful that Liv is enjoying her course and settling in Lincoln well. The lack of social activities is a shame this year, especially for freshers, as it’s hard for them to get to know other students. I’m pleased Georgia has her group of friends this year but even then Georgia has said it’s different as last year they went out quite often to cafes for lunches but they’ve been limiting how much they go out this year and being more cautious

I’m so pleased the change of uni has worked out well so far for your DD. I think driving and getting lost would be my biggest fear too 😂
I’m so pleased she managed to get to chat to some other students to help her settle in. I guess the online lectures are a bonus for your DD as it means she doesn’t have to commute in each day. |

Glad to hear everyone unsettling back in, most of DD classes are face to face as its Musical Theatre. They are wearing masks/visors where practical and then more spacing for example in singing classes as she said they tried visors and then just misted up. Ballet looked interesting with a mask and visor on. They have had couple of disagreements in their shared house that they wouldn't have had if it wasn't for the current situation but they seemed t o have resolved this. It sounds like the vast majority on her course are following the guidelines as they don't want to go back to online classes again.

That’s good news that your DD is having face to face classes. I would imagine a ballet class in masks would look very strange though 😀
Georgia was worrying about whether her housemates would have different views than she has, but thankfully they are all being sensible and are sticking to not socialising outside their household and are vigilant about hand washing, masks etc so there’s been no problems thankfully |

How is everyone getting on and I hope they haven't had too much disruption to the start of their 2nd years. DD has said they have had a few people isolating but no huge numbers like some of the unis. It's reading week at DDs uni next week however she isn't coming home as she is doing a workshop for a new musical so will be in 9am to 9pm everyday. So it looks like Christmas will be when we see her next.

You beat me to it. I came on here to ask how everyone was getting on in the current climate!
My daughter has been back in Lincoln since 1st August, but the uni only started back on 12th October. She lives in a house of 4 and 1 of her housemates had to have a test as she was working with 2 people who tested positive. Then last week, her other housemate got an email to say she needed to self isolate as 2 people in her lecture had tested positive. Luckily both housemates tested negative. I have friends whose children are 1st teas and in halls and were self isolating almost straight away. I think the is going to be very common for a while. Not what they signed up for. My daughter is meant to be coming home mid November for a few days the week of her birthday, but she thinks there will be a possibility she will be self isolating. So I think in reality, it will be Christmas. |

It’s so difficult for them isn’t it? I think all of our students are doing so well coping with last year’s disappointment and early end and now the upheaval and uncertainty of this year. I think when they returned in September, they were led to believe that it would lead to some normality and sadly this hasn’t been the case
Georgia is very happy with her friends in her house share this year and all four girls are mainly only socialising in their household group and spending their free time playing games, going on walks and having takeaways. Georgia isn’t enjoying the online lectures and says it’s taking her twice as long to watch them and understand them. She had her first lab session last week, a 3 hour recap, which she says was boring. However, that was just because it was a recap. She did say the lab sessions will be excellent for her as they tie in with the lectures so will be really helpful so she is grateful that they are going ahead. We haven’t been able to see her since she went as we were in local lockdown, now full lockdown here in Wales. It was her 20th birthday on Thursday and it’s mine next Tuesday, so it’s been a bit difficult for me as we would usually have visited her or she would have come home for the weekend. Georgia is coping well though. |

It’s very worrying for us when we realise the risks they have at university of catching the virus so it’s stressful when they have to isolate. We all know that younger people tend to only have mild forms and many have no symptoms at all, but I know I would worry if Georgia were ill and there are many younger ones who feel quite poorly with it too and it’s a parent’s instinct to be there when a child is ill.
I do hope your DD manages to come home or you get to see her in November. Georgia’s reading week is the week that the current lockdown in Wales is due to end so I’m hoping that will mean we get to see her in some way although I’m trying not to build my hopes up as we’ve just moved from one lockdown to another and it’s very possible that there will further restrictions so we will just have to wait and see. |
