central heating pipework

A friend has moved into a new house and the central heating boiler is not working and needs to be replaced it has not worked for a number of years, there is a central heating system fitted (radiators and pipework)approx 15 years old, will this system still be functioning? or will it have reached the end of its lifespan and need to be replaced
Is there anyway of checking the system for leaks without having a boiler?

You might want to post this in the “General” thread as not everyone reads the current issues one

It should work fine but a good recomssion and service would be beneficial - basically a power flush and pressure check. Make sure the system is refilled with an inhibiter to avoid rusting in the future.
Check the radiators for signs of corrosion/rust incase they have rusted from the inside out. Radiators are easily replaced.
Personally I wold probably replace all the valves with new thermostatic ones just for peace of mind.
A heating system pipework should last decades.

OP. I can't anything to what Tspill has already said.

I had our 34 year old boiler replaced last week. The pipework is still fine and should last for at least another 30 years probably more. Copper doesn't degrade unless it's in the elements such as outside in the frost and rain.

As an aside I replaced all our Rads and Valves about 3 Months ago. However that was because they were looking old fashioned.

Thank you am I right in assuming that the boiler would have to be replaced before she could flush the system, and am I right in thinking that even if there is rust and the radiators need replacing that the pipework should be basically fine?as you can see we are complete novices

Thank you because there was signs of some rust on some of the radiators we were assuming it meant everything had to be replaced, she has tried to get people to come out to give estimates and advice as to whether it is just a boiler replacement or if the whole system needs replacing but everyone says they cant come out they have no staff because of covid its a nightmare

If there is rust on the radiators, I would replace them along with the valves. If you do this, the system will be as good as new.

Decent radiators are around £50-60ish each (depending on size) and once the system is drained, takes a plumber maybe 30 minutes to replace each.

Getting tradespeople at the minute seems to be. nightmare as they are so incredibly busy. I have an electrician friend who is saying that since March, he has never been so busy. Worked all through lockdown.
Not sure how to deal with this though.

My Mate did my new boiler. He is now booked through until the Spring.

A lot of catch up going on due to some Tradesmen going into furlough a while back for some weird reason.
