Tech for older people

My mum is struggling a bit with keeping in touch, remembering to take meds etc. She is OK with her ipad and phone and laptop, but i was thinking about getting her an echo dot or Alexa. My sister calls her at regular times for meds etc. I was wondering how other elderly parents get on with the dot/alexa etc or whether to scrap the idea. Mum is 83 and doesnt go out now. 🙁

You can set reminders on Alexa. I take daily medication and have a reminder for every night to take my pills. You would be able to set up the reminders for her and she could also use it for listening to the radio etc

My parents can't get to grips with central heating thermostat ,sky TV or mobile phones. No chance with an iPad or laptop or even an Alexa.

Why not try a memory loss clock? My Mam had 2, one in the bedroom to remind her it was 3 in the morning so to stay in bed (didn't always work &#128549 and one in the living room which we added reminders too. About £30 from Amazon

My elderly aunt and uncle have an echo (i bought it). They have learnt along the way, they wouldn’t have believed a few years ago they’d have Netflix on the tv and have an iPad. We have an echo show, which would be really useful for video calls between them, I’d recommend them. They love asking for different music on the Alexa, and i set up a light switch so they can ask for a lamp to come on that they were having difficulty reaching. Black Friday coming up soon, maybe some deals on the echo show 5

If she already uses a mobile phone see if your local health service uses the Florence system. It sends text reminders and can be set up by health care workers to be specific to the person's prescription and doses
