Stunning Scenery, wildlife and our "Wonder"ful Disney friends! - Rockies & Alaska Aug 2014 - Day 2

Monday 18th August

As expected we were awake VERY early at 3am. Breakfast wasn't until 6am, so we were up showered, dressed and the kids had whatsapped their friends and we were down for breakfast 5.50! As we later found, in all the Holiday Inn Express hotels we stayed in, breakfast was lovely and plentiful. There was a waffle maker, scrambled egg, sausage, pastries etc and just look at the size of those muffins!

As we were up so early and it was a glorious morning, we explored Kelowna which was lovely and we were back to hotel and pool by 8.30.

The kids had a swim and go on the water slide while Martin had a quick look around the Walmart next door.

We were on the road by 10.40.

The restaurant manager at breakfast had spoken to us for 5 minutes - she was really friendly, which is how we found all the Canadians. I mentioned to Martin how they were not "in your face" like some of the Americans can be. She had mentioned how lovely and ripe all the local fruits were and recommended we bought some when we saw any people selling it. A little way into our trip we saw people selling fruit and we bought some peaches and cherries from roadside. I think we got a bit ripped off, but the fruit was huge and lasted for a good few day on our trip!

There were lots of lovely views of lakes and mountains which would get even more stunning as the trip went on.

Along the way, we saw something that seemed really popular for a Monday morning! It was called Log Barn 1912 which was just after Vernon and just before Edenbury on Highway 97a. The only way I can describe it was like a farm shop/garden centre. There were lots of samples of jams, chutneys and cheeses which you were welcome to try. We had a good 45 mins/hour walking around there. It also had an area where you could feed the goats and the goats walked up on a big bridge. It was a lovely place to have a quick stop to stretch your legs.

We stopped and had lunch at Lake Mara which was nice, but a few wasps about, so we didn't stay long.

It was quite hot today - around 30 degrees.

We got to Golden about 5ish. We drove up to Kicking Horse ski resort which was lovely and I can imagine was beautiful in the Winter. We drove up a road looked for bears, but saw this sign which made the girls a bit scared - didn't see any!

We checked into Holiday Inn Express, which again was very nice.

We went to Boston Pizza which had a huge menu. We had burgers - a jalapeño and a BBQ Bacon burger, cheeseburger and bacon pizza (which was quite interesting) and a calzone.

There were two types of calzone, one had a herby dough and the other was plain. We asked if our youngest could have the calzone she wanted with the plain dough which the waitress said was OK. When it came with the other meals, it wasn't the right one. So we told the waitress who said she would get another one. We had all finished our meals before hers came and when it arrived it was the right dough, but now a different filling! She ate it anyway, but the service wasn't great and the waitress was nowhere to be seen. In the end we asked for the calzone to be taken off the bill. The rests of the meals were lovely, so it hasn't put us off.

We got back and the girls had a swim in the indoor pool before bed while I sat and watched and checked the dibb!

It really was an amazing trip. When we were trying to decide what to do once we had booked cruise and flights to Vancouver, some people thought that doing the Rockies might have been a bad idea when I asked for advice as we had less than a week, but it really was the best decision we made otherwise we would have missed the awesome scenery!

Just realized we stayed at the same Holiday inn at Golden, it was very nice except we had no breakfast after the coach load of Japanese completely stripped the place, they were tipping boiled eggs in their rucksacks, we found it very amusing

Were you there on the same day as us? We were warned by the reception staff not to go to breakfast until after a certain time because of them. We got out of the pool in the evening to find the hotel had been taken over by the trying to get to their rooms in the lift!

I bet that was a sight in the breakfast room. How funny!
