No I would never go without insurance. Especially if pregnant. Especially to the USA. That said people make errors of judgement. All of us. There’s a fragile little human involved. They face financial ruin. I’ll give them a tenner on go fund and keep my fingers crossed for their baby and their safe return.

Never travel anywhere without insurance. Even with insurance I don’t trust the companies and always think any claim would be rejected due to some small print I hadn’t seen. Travelled for 30 odd years and never made a claim once !
As for this couple they have been very foolish. I am sure they will get the money together to pay. The idiots who travelled aren’t the ones in need it is an innocent baby.

Absolutely no way would I travel without insurance!

We had to cancel our October 2016 as 2 weeks before travelling, our youngest daughter (then age 6) developed septic hip arthritis and we almost lost her.

Our travel insurance could not do enough for us and every single thing we had paid for including flights, hotel, tickets were covered.

It made me realise that if we had been on holiday, how lucky we would have been to have insurance.

I understand that some premiums may be high but if it was a case of travelling with no insurance or not going, I would choose the latter.

It is just not worth the risk.

Edited to add, I have just looked at their go fund me page and it has only raised $1937/$500,000 since the 8th August which is probably why the story has ended up in a national newspaper

I work in the industry. About 1/3 of people do not have travel insurance even though it can cost as little as £9 per trip!

To be honest, I always have annual insurance but I’ve never claimed. I now have a lot of health conditions which are all declared, however I do wonder if I did have to claim would it be worth the paper it’s written on - probably not. I take the belief that unless you have absolutely no medical history there would always be a way the insurance company would wiggle out of it.

That said, I still pay hefty premiums every year in the hope I at least have a chance of being covered.
