Which cross breed would work best?

We’re thinking of getting a second dog in the summer to be a companion to our Golden Retriever. He’s 13 and we had to have his brother pts a few weeks ago. He’s coped remarkably well but is used to having a companion. We’ve had a collie cross before (the most amazing dog ever) and we’re looking at another cross as we feel they’re more hardy. When we had our last collie, there were few options in terms of crosses - no one knew who dad was and we’d happily go down that route again, but I’m struggling to find Heinz 57s in this world of designer crosses. Need a pup as our older dog is very tolerant of puppies but more nervous of full grown dogs he doesn’t know. Any advice gratefully received. We need a dog that doesn’t suffer separation anxiety but that likes a good walk.

Why not go for another cross collie? We had a cross collie when we first got married. She was a fantastic dog. She followed DH around all the time. Went to work with him when he helped out at his parents business and would run alongside the forklift.

I keep looking at other dogs, can't decide whether to go for another or not. We lost our working cocker last Christmas and I still miss him so much. I've looked at cockapoo but DS thinks it may be as energetic as Murphy was and I want something a bit less work! DH said he would go for a cross collie in a minute but I'm not so keen. I like the spaniel breed. I've also looked at miniature dachshunds but DH thinks they may have spine issues. They are so cute.

Labradoodle - two sets of different friend have them and both digs are without doubt the friendliest, lovers (not haters) and most intelligent dogs I have ever met but a very long way

We have two crossbreeds an old border terrier jack Russell Cross who loves a walk, no issues with separation anxiety all he wants is somewhere to sleep most the day lol, we have a rescue saluki Cross lurcher too who we got from a pup, he has terrible separation anxiety but when left now can cope but is very pleased to see us when we return, he's never alone for more than a couple of hours, he loves a walk and a run but he's very lazy and as long as he can get in his bed or on mine 🙄 he's a happy boy, he is the most affectionate dog I have ever come across he loves all dogs and is very friendly but he does bark a lot, it's like he's saying hey come and play with me lol

We’ve got a Lab/springer cross (we think!) and he’s a lovely dog with a brilliant temperament

We had a labxcollie when I was growing up, a better dog you would be hard to find.
I’ve just got a pure bred lab now and he’s very easy going

We had a lab/collie cross growing up. He was the most loving, laid back dog ever.

I’ve got a cockapoo and a lab. Very different temperaments, lab is lad back...cockapoo needy and they are known to be prone to separation anxiety. Mine copes being left but is far happier with me! He’s also a total one person dog, whereas the lab loves everyone!

Why don't you visit a few rescues and see what they have there? Our local has had a few collie crosses for rehoming in the past couple of months. But if you're like me you'll go to a rescue wanting something specific and then fall in love and adopt the complete opposite
