I second New Smyrna Beach, we went in November and had a lovely day. We were lucky as there was a craft fair on loads to see, you can take your car on the beach or park nearby. Going again on our next visit.

It really depends on what you like to do when you get there.

Do you sit on the beach all day, walk the beach, swim, sit in a bar and get ... , or what?

For a day trip your options are New Smyrna Beach, Daytona Beach and possibly Flagler Beach. Bear in mind that Daytona Beach is over 20 miles long and includes subsidiary resorts like Wilbur Beach and Ormond Beach.

sit on the beach bit of sun , maybe some body boarding

as much as id like to spend the day in a bar getting on it,not really an option with a 12 year old & driving anyway

I know nothing about body boarding but believe New Smyrna is rated for this. Beware of sharks!

We surf here in the UK and when in Florida we head for Melbourne Beach and Paradise Beach. The surf can be quite strong and the cheap styrofoam bodyboards will almost certainly break in half. I would rent a board, there are a few places to rent fairly decent boards along the beach at a reasonable price.
