Should have done some research and bought resale.

We have our DVC in the Boardwalk since 2000 and it has been worth every penny. However, I would not buy now. Very expensive, I'm not keen on some of the newer resorts and now we have kids the holiday times we have to go means it's busy and flights are stupidly expensive. I think with the change in the exchange rate and the downturn with the recession buying recently may not have been such a good investment for then selling on. Such a shame you have had such a bad experience.

Disney do warn you that buying DVC isn't an investment which in itself would say its going to cost you and you cannot expect to make a profit.

DVC doesn't suit everyone but then again it does suit an awful number of people who all consider DVC to be a good deal for them.

Personally I'm with Barron and Barron. I would rent out until I could sell without losing too much money.

It depends what you mean by lost money.

If I bought into DVC I would expect that my annual holidays to Disney would work out cheaper than paying each time, taking into abound Free DDP etc but I would not expect to make a profit at the end.

However I would be cross if I could have saved money by booking with Disney each year individually. Surely the DVC works out Cheaper than buying direct a holiday Per year or why would people join?

So I assume you are saying you have lost money as it would have been cheaper to purchase holidays each year from Disney ?

It's a timeshare we have been more than happy with for over ten years. We have reached break even point. It's all about how you use it. Yes resorts do get tired but they get refurbed. I have an issue re perks, booking DLP with points but these are small niggles not major issues. We had a fabulous holiday at Tokyo Disneyland via Disney Collection so can't see the OPs issues. It was their choice to sell.

When we bought in the $ was 2.05 so we think we got a bargain. Would I buy an add on now - definitely not.

We bought in 2003 at $73 a point, well not being home to check it I think it was that!
Where can I get 10 weeks vacation on Disney property every year for the cost of my annual dues?
Excellent investment and I could sell and just about break even or even make a small profit on some of the smaller contracts we have.

I never considered it to be an investment just a way of forward paying for vacations.

Notwithstanding that no way would I pay $176 a point which I think is the current sell price for the Poly and WL.

However I need a lie down now as we walked 8.9 miles in the MK today!

As the price for SSR has been fairly static, one can only guess that the OP bought Direct, I think I'd be fairly gutted if I bought SSR direct at $165/point & had to sell around the $85 mark. AS YorkshireT advises, for any potential buyers, do your due diligence. I wouldn't put anyone off of buying Direct but it really is a long term commitment & worth remembering that if you sell you are basically selling a "lesser" contract as it then has the Resale restrictions.
We love SSR & can't really say that it's gone downhill, although whoever thgought up the TV/Room layout needs to have a word with themselves as if you are lying in bed you can't see the bottom of the screen for your feet !
SD
PS I've tried very hard not to say what I bought our contract at

Having looked back (search is a wonderful thing) OP was a member back in 2009 at least and had 200 points. It looks like they bought direct but of course prices were lower.

I didn't buy as an investment as clearly that is not what it is and any money I get back in the fullness of time will be a bonus
