problems with racoons rummaging in your dustbins

Do other folk have issues with racoons rummaging in the dustbins for food?
We put our black bags out in Bins and everynight a racoon is found inside the bin.

If they have got into the habit i.e. Somebody has overloaded the bin and left the lid ajar and they have got in they are very clever at working out how to open the lid
I never go out to the bin after dark since I was met by 2 very shiny eyes and as mad as a hatter raccoon we haven't had an issue since I gave it what for with a broom
Very stupid as they can carry all sort and get as mad as hell
In fact our HOA are looking at trash cans with lids that clip shut
It's not uncommon we use the waste disposal for everything possible
But of course bones ,tea bags ,corn cob husks etc can't go down it
Critters are a fact of life here in Florida that's why we tell guests do not feed the wild life ever look and admire only

Here in Osceola the county has changed to big uniform bins with attached lids that are lifted by a mechanism on the truck. Definitely too heavy for the raccoons to knock over or chew through now.

With the old light weight ones, putting them in the garage might be the only solution.

PS be glad it isn't the small black bears getting in yours.

Donna think that's what we might be getting as well but folks need to make sure the lid shuts or they too will be useless or should I say subject to user failure

I can only suggest if the owner has not done so already you invest in a couple of bungees to keep the lids of the bins closed preventing the little critters getting in the bins, just remember to take them off before the garbage truck comes to empty them.

When we had trouble with raccoons, those bungees were the only thing that kept them out. Brilliant creatures can get into anything.

As soon as we realised it was going in Bins, we stopped putting anything edible in bags and instead went down the sink waste disposal.

We had this a few years ago at a villa, we still haven’t worked out how they managed to get in the bin, retrieve the bones of a rack of ribs, get them out, knaw on them and then leave a big pile of bones on the bin lid? Must have been two working together?

We have stayed on Sandy Ridge quite a few times, and have never managed to keep them out of the bins. We just picked up the litter every morning.
Went out one evening to put the rubbish bag in the bin, to be met by one sat in the bin... and he wasn’t moving! Hubby upended the bin and tipped him out, put the bin back upright... only to find he quickly scrabbles back up, and plonked himself back in the bin.
Another evening, a couple of them ran past us whilst we were in the pool, carrying chicken legs.
There’s a guy a few houses down from us, who feed them on an evening, puts out dry cat biscuits.
We love seeing them stroll by when we are in the pool, we don’t bother them, they don’t bother us

They are so cute, I love to see them. Never had a problem with them going through the bins though as ours have heavy lids.
I hope the ones provided by the new trash company are as sturdy, we paid good money for our old bins.
